AA or RAC?

  1. Last year we were with the RAC (tesco club card deal), but on our travels we noticed a distinct lack of RAC vans on road. So much so that we played spot the RAC van on the way back from the Isle of Wight and only spotted 1!
Thankfully we did not need their services, but I did get me thinking that if we ever did need the RAC we could be in for a very very long wait.
As I need to renew my breakdown cover....... which break down service would you recommend???
    Thanks

only ever been with the AA and i carnt fault them A+ FROM ME

  3. We always think there's a distinct shortage of RAC vans on the road too! We're very sad and count all sorts of things on the motorways including RAC vans, AA vans, AA 'going home trucks', campers (of course) and we see about 100 more AA vans than RAC vans.

We're with the AA and have become well acquainted with them in recent years ::) (So much so that one who had fixed us on the way to VolkPower on the east coast waved and went mental when he spotted us trundling along nicely about 8 weeks later in a totally different part of the country hahahahhaahahahaaa).

  4. The rac tend to sub out night time patrols to local recovery agents, the aa only use their own. I have been in rac for years with no bother when needing to call them out.
Make sure you are the member and not the car so it doesn't matter which car you are in if it breaks down

  5. The AA do subcontract, both for flat bed vehicles and the original call out vehicle.

  6. look at the RAC's small print they can charge you a sir charge on vans and modified vehicles

but they won't tell you how much till you brake down

  7. As a roadside patrol i wouldnt go with either have a long look at Green Flag - I have done work for both AA and Rac the performance is very poor -

i left the aa as they kept upping my membership fee, they then started reducing my services. it got to £160 for the year. they were brilliant but far too expensive imo. i'm now with the rac through my bank, only had to use them once and they were spot on!

  9. AA for me, if u feel ur being over charged n payon too much ring em n tell em ur leavin they bend over backwards to keep u. I did this last year n my premium went from 130 to 55!!!!

  10. I'm with the AA and they've always been great, both with my daily cars and with the van. I broke down once in the van, and when the AA man arrived, he called his brother, who was an aircooled VW specialist!

  11. RAC they got my tranny lwb to the garage when i needed it to go.. not used em in 5 yrs

  13. Thanks everyone for the honest opinions.

Looks like the AA have just got another customer :)

  14. I had the AA out 4 time last year and 6 the year before! They have never let me down

I've always been a fan of the RAC, had some very knowledgeable/capable guys turn up when ive called them out, and out of hours have a had a localish recovery company attend.

Green flag predominantly use sub contracted garages - most of the time you'll end up with a recovery driver with a torch who might just about diagnose a flat battery and be able to put a jump start pack on, theres more money in it for them to recover the car than repair it.

AA, staff are knowledgeable and they are well equipped to repair rather than tow, Only thing i've heard that goes against them is the recovery/relay service, if you are at the other end of the country, to get home might involve 6 or so different recovery trips as they pass you on to the next driver of an area in a relay style.

I got to learn alot about the different companies when working in insurance and having to 'try' and sell Green Flag cover.

  16. Thanks for the detailed info Kruger. just confirms my earlier thought that the AA is the way to go.

  17. I get AA cover with my bank account... Called them out several times in the past, although not yet for the Camper, they were very professional and got us started again..

We are covered personally, so doesn't matter what car you have.. Doesn't even need to be ours!

  18. what he said^^ got us back from France

I'm with the AA and have been for years. Only had one problem with them in 2005 when they sub contracted out a flat bed for my little Peugeot and its broken gear linkage. Chap tried it on saying I only had 15 mile relay!!!

Perhaps the lack of RAC vans is because RAC members have better serviced cars
