The other side isn’t quite as nice as this! Think it’ll need some hammer and dolly first.

  2. Lots of work for not much to show but it will be well worth it in the end

A huge milestone this week. The final panel into epoxy! By far the worst panel on the van to do. Onto priming the interior next week.

Well it’s taken considerably longer than I thought it would (nearly a week), as someone had previously covered huge chunks of the interior in white emulsion which was a pig to remove so I ended up bare metalling much more than planned. The interior is now completely epoxy primed and I can move onto prepping the exterior for some high build primer!

  6. Looking good James, mine's been white emulsion covered inside at the front and the bulk head, looks like I'll be having the same fun as you.

Starting the long job of rubbing the epoxy primer down ready for high build primer. Some panels will need finishing filler applied to further refine the shape but the majority of the filler work is thankfully behind me!

Love that gif, kind of epitomises the endless task of prep!

  11. At least the filler primer is a lot easier to sand.
    Loving the gif aswell

It’s times like this that the thousands of hours I’ve poured into this project really pay off. 3 coats of high build primer onto the shell last night. I’m chuffed with it. There are a few areas that still need some work (the transition into the lip on the N/S rear arch isn’t perfect) but on the whole it’s looking great.

I’ve also picked up the base coats now. I’m a way off needing them but can’t wait to get them on!

  14. Well James, Iris is really looking fantastic in particular the symmetry of the rear end and seal recesses and she is a great testament to your attention to detail and resistance to haste. The colours are interesting and I am looking forward to seeing Iris wearing some. I am now firmly behind you with Lottie and would be grateful for any tips regarding the junction between top and bottom colours: I keep trying to imagine clever ways to make sure the masking line is straight and without overlap or gaps. I read somewhere that it is better to use a plastic masking tape for critical stripes? Best wishes Martin

  15. Seconded! Likewise I’m excitedly planning ahead and starting to think of paint, though it’s not ready yet! Can anyone recommend which order is best, white or colour first? Initially I was thinking the bottom colour as you can hide any overlap at the join under the bulge but that doesn’t work for the front panel. Also if colour is under white it could bleed through. Maybe the answer is just to be precise with the masking tape and do it well rather than bodge it!

Cheers Martin. Still sanding the bloody roof! Not particularly enjoying this section to be honest.

My plan is to paint top half first then bottom and try to mask it as carefully as possible. Fletch mentions using some fabric style tape to help curve round I think.

  17. Use fine line tape then normal masking tape on top so you don't get any bleeding underneath normal masking tape .then you will have the perfect finish line

There's a guy called Jeff on You Tube who's restored an orange 911 with racing stripes. When he sprayed the stripes he masked up with fineline and masking tape; did a light coat of orange so that if that bled it wouldn't matter, then blew the stripe colours... this might be suited to our two tone tanks too.

After a busy couple of weekends playing guitar at both Palmstock (annual charity shindig) and one of my oldest friend’s wedding (an absolutely great day), I’m back on the van hitting it hard. Roof all rubbed down, prepped and into primer. Just the cab doors and sliding door left to high build!

Still plodding on. I’ve been reshaping the cab doors as I wasn’t happy with my first attempts. They’re looking a lot better now so hoping to prime them this week (still not perfect but think they’ll have to do as don’t think I can physically spend much more time on them, see below)

I’ve not been down the workshop over the past few days as I’ve been experiencing awful tooth ache over the last week or so which I originally thought was due to my recently fitted crown. Two dental visits and X-rays shows no issues with the teeth and they believe I’m either grinding my teeth or clenching my jaw. I think while I’ve been sanding I’ve been unknowingly gritting my teeth :( . I’ve bought a gum shield to try and stop me doing it. I’m pretty much done on the filler work so hopefully won’t experience more pain.
