A restoration for Iris

  1. Hi James its a dilemma and Paradox used the word that has been on my mind as I shadow your progress with that on my Lottie restro. Its the word that's said to have gotten an employee at the early Rolls Royce car factory the sack, when he was overheard to say that the part he was making was good ENOUGH! But with the cooler (as you so rightly mention) and more humid weather approaching, I think we will have to accept that RR standards are inappropriate for our utility vans and buses and that its more important to get them protected and with a pleasing shine though not necessarily perfectly flat or true to the metal formers that stamped the panels out way back in the 70's.

I keep telling myself that whilst its true that more preparation may produce a better finish, there is a mountain of other work to do before I have a convincing vehicle of quality. Furthermore, if all that other work is successful I would not be averse to revisiting some panels with abrasives and spray gun and more importantly with a fresh perspective on the relative benefit. I am sure you will strike a good balance and soon be cracking on with the fun of adding the bits that make a box into a bus.

  2. Absolutely this. Mines far from perfect but tidy and use able. It won't win any shows but hopefully it will get used. Oh and I've scratched and dented it putting it back together.

I think you’ve hit the nail on the head there. Having spent 6 months filling and sanding and priming I’m happy to call it a day and start getting the rest of it ready for the road!

Doors all re-primed tonight following the further filler work they needed.

Long panels on the van re-primed (much happier with the arch profile on the N/S now).

  11. Thanks James, did you have to remove the old waxoil and underseal before handing it over to the blasters?
They are going to use glass on mine btw.

  13. Bet your glad you took my advice about the wheels now. It looks really good, is it wrong that I'm excited to see it in colour?

Definitely! My new wheels would be filthy by now. The whole workshop is a dusty mess at the moment.
I can’t wait for colour either.

All trying to get 'em painted before it gets too cold I reckon!
Quite looking forward to spending winter re-building it for next year. My birthday is in April so I definitely want to go for a camp around then.
