Another little knitting side project finished. Pair o socks for me. Fit around the leg is a bit loose but these are only the 2nd pair of 4 ply socks I've made. I seem to find it difficult to sit idle at the moment!
Achieved very little tonight on the van. Started making a repair for the chassis around the rear torsion bar but wasn't happy with it so ended up binning it. I think I'll have to do it in two parts as it curves in two plains and my attempts to do it with one piece failed. Back to the old drawing board.
I'm sure you're working to a budget and like to make what you can, but are you aware you can buy those repair bits?
Ha typically it's disappeared now I look for it. Was in my eBay watch list for yonks. Came in 2 halves, was about £30 ish. Think it was the same company who make those mad flipover front bench seats, can't remember the name now. Sorry !
Google says it's evolution vw near Salisbury, pretty sure it was them but no mention of the part on their site. Maybe worth a call see if they've any lying round
Got a bit further with this repair tonight but only had a while down there so didn't finish it. @zedders you were right I'd lost the line, starting again was the best approach. I'll weld a strip to fill the remainder and then fold a lip into it. Too many curves to do as one piece. I'll smooth the curve out a tiny bit more I think. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Got the chassis repair piece finished today: Some nice looking welds on it too! And trail fitted, looking a lot neater. While the paint dried on this side, I started looking at the N/S chassis rail which also needs some work, but is no-where near as bad as the O/S. I’ve managed to retain most of the cone section on this side (I replaced it entirely on the side I’ve just done). Left overnight in rust treatment.
A little more chassis work today. Chopped out the vertical section of chassis on the N/S: Made a repair for the vertical section (I had enough clean metal to not need to make anything too fiddly here): Bent oversized flanges into it, and made an oversized cover plate (will trim both down to match the rest of the chassis): Got the repairs etched and partially epoxied, should get some of them welded in tomorrow. So close now to getting the floor ready!
One especially for @zedders. Got the O/S chassis repair welded in around the rear torsion bar, and the brake cable guide tube re-instated (again). I cranked up the heat for the bit around the torsion bar which made a massive difference. Hope you approve! I'll leave the welds as they are for strength. Looks loads better than what was there. Got some epoxy on the inside of the N/S section so I can weld that repair in tomorrow and have done with the metal work needed prior to the floor going in.
Got some paint on this side: And welded in both sections on the N/S (still need to weld a small cone section): Rear torsion beam chassis section looks solid again.
A useful tool for those undertaking a resto is Trello, it allows you to create a task list and keeps it all in one place, mines here: https://trello.com/b/weGXV4dY/iris-restoration
Thanks mate. Trying my best! Aim is to be back on the road next summer but that might be too ambitious. Time will tell. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Looks like its coming along nicely. Rolling it onto its side looks like it makes it a helluva lot easier to do chassis work instead of lying on your back under it welding above your head.
Canea remember off the top of my head. I vaguely think it's the heavier stuff but I could be wrong. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
