A change is a coming...

  1. true... but all proper tea is theft! I guess it just never sat right with me, and having rented for many years i certainly never wanted to become one of those landlords!

round here i could find any number of people who would be happy to rent my house and leave their current landlord.

rent alone would not cover my living/travel expenses so would need to be a travelling worker type.

You could become a trucker and get paid to travel Europe ;)

My brother has mentioned this kind of thing to me... then accused me of over thinking every move I make!

So I have a small family and can’t just disappear, but do get twitchy about wanting to do a ski season or a little bit of Far East travel. This will have to be done as hols or wait until nipper has left home.

I do overthink my camper... to the detriment it tends not to go far!! Would love to spend some proper time touring in it, perhaps before nipper goes to school.

I am a landlord too.. proper sherif bloody fatman! Through hard work and circumstances we found ourselves in the position where we could scrape together a deposit and rent our first home. Our tenant is a European family that run a small shop.... they pay market rates for the house and probably wouldn’t be able to buy in the UK easily. So I guess it suits them. I would also say that ethical landlording doesn’t work. I always suggested that the annual rent review was below the percentage the agent suggested with previous tenants... they still stick two fingers up and disappear leaving the house in a state! The deposit deduction rules do not favour landlords and the tax man is upping the amount they take... so there is a balance.

To be honest, it would be unlikely to give you an income while you travel... best invest in a bigger portfolio :)

I guess we all fall into our own character traits... if your a risk taker, you’d already be gone. If you’re a careful doer, you’ll be off when you’re ready. If your a risk averse over thinker you’ll be answering posts on this thread in a years time!

If I were in your position, I would get the house ready to rent, at market rates, spend the winter working out where to go and go in the spring...

    Or maybe the summer :)

Incidentally I have been a landlord for a very long time with more than one tenant to deal with. Every fifth tenant in my experience is a good one, the rest make being a landlord a ball ache. I have no moral issues working hard to renovate a property after scraping the funds together and providing a home for someone who otherwise may not be able to have a nice home. Yes, I make money, but mostly it’s hard work and worrying at times!

  10. i am looking at feasibility for going sooner rather than later but i am a cautious risk taker, so as much as it's be nice to just up and go... i'd like to make sure me/things/the cat are ready. and there's also the question of where to..how long..for what? but what i do know is that i'm ready to start the process now and i'm not going to wait for life to just happen but to make it happen.

I've obviously upset folk with the landlord/renting comment - certainly not my intention. we're all different and that's a good thing, but was merely stating my views, politics and misgivings about it :)

  11. it is! my pert roundness started to crawl down the back of my thighs a couple of years ago, but this is definitely weight loss and it'll be back up and running(?) soon, i'm sure. i seem to have got out of the habit of eating (i haven't had an appetite for about 8 months) but i'm not too fussed as I had a bit to lose :)

  12. Nothing odd about it at all. We've all rented over the years when finances and circumstances dictate, but there has been a marked change in the affordability of doing so. Renting was usually the cheaper option to buying, now it's the opposite, so people who can't get a mortgage somehow have to find even more money to rent. People who would have traditionally got 8% savings interest from keeping their savings in banks and Building Societies now look to make that off fellow citizens instead!

Seems to me like you’re on the cusp, but having second thoughts. Do it, get out and live and stop peeing about. You can spend your life being sensible, but in the end you might look back and say ‘ I have been very sensible. Feck!’

  16. Please don't think I was referring to you or anyone else here in my responses - I was referring to my own pondering over the ethics of some landlords - especially having shelled out for several years of student housing rents for my son - that genuinely is slum landlord territory!

  18. i didn't and i wholeheartedly agree with you. i didn't buy my first house until my thirties because i was against ownership. my politics inform me a great deal, but like you said, i bought a house because it was cheaper than renting in the end.
