  2. Rusty french but could get by :)

  3. I'm a perpetual worrier - to the extent that I've got money sat in the bank that should be going into property, but I struggle with the ethics of buy to let housing because its seems many people use it as a cash cow to take money off people who cant afford to buy a house themselves..

When I mention ethical renting to Mrs P she just shakes her head, so we never do it.

  7. I'm with you on that. I would've been able to keep my beautiful house in notts and rented it out (v low mortgage/high rent) and buy a house here... i looked into it and got swept up in the whole thing. BUT i'm not a landlord, nor want to be, a house is a home and even though i had two friends wanting to rent it, i just couldn't do it. if i were to rent this one it would be a hell of a moral/mental leap for me but would make sure it was a fair and equitable arrangement.

  8. i worked in Lyon a long, long time ago...
Ugh. I'm ignoring the whole travesty until people come to their senses and i'll be damned if other people are going to stop me living my life. where there's a will.... :)

  9. Ski resorts at this time of year are crying out for staff. That’s exactly what my Cousin did now she spends every season running a hotel for Inghams ski in Italy

  10. now there's a thought... but am giving myself winter to get stuff done here and set the groundwork/planning done, which will mean a new job to pay the bills too. I'm not going to rush into anything but, as usual, want to put myself in the best position before i make a move. If you have any details you could message me, that'd be great - never say never :)

Don’t forget that your supposed ‘grown up talk’ was with @Lasty, an economic migrant.

He still doesn’t speak English proper but we let him stay!! :)

  17. Very odd way to look at being a landlord. There are plenty of people who prefer to rent. They don't like the idea of owning a property and all the hassle that goes with it or putting down roots and staying in once place for many years. They like the freedom of giving a months notice and being free and clear to travel/holiday/move as they wish.
We rented when we moved to Dorset, it gave us breathing space to look around and decide where we would like to buy, it's not all Dickensian poor houses and gruel you know.
I'd rent and travel in your camper, stay in this country for a while maybe. I work with a guy in Ireland and he made a list of places in his own backyard that he wanted to visit, a realisation brought on by a tree falling on his car and nearly killing him. He says there are so many places to explore. You could do a whistle stop tour of the TLB peeps and then as barn says venture to France and go see the people over there, seasonal work etc etc.
The worlds your orange, go for it.

  18. Mrs ST's old boss took a year out to travel in his converted van (don't know what type). Went all round Europe then never came back.... ended up in Nepal building villages for the locals & has adopted a young (not so young now probably) child. He has set up a charity which sells Nepalese wares (stripey jackets & the like made from yaks wool) so that the villages can fund themselves..... Deserves a medal does Gary Collier if you ask me!
    Go for it
