Even for a rank amateur? Not that it really matters as I have no idea where to get the 0.82 gear from!
have you guys got that right ? if a 4th gear from a 1600 box is better than a 1800 box surely you would just fit the 1600 box ? I think i`m missing something
The ring and pinion (final drive) radio in a 1600 box is different from the one in the 1800 box, thats where the difference is. 1600/1700 - 5.37:1 1800 - 4.867:1 2000- 4.57:1
The 1800 box with the 0.82 4th from a 3 rib box gives a longer final gear than the 2.0 box for reasons I don't really understand!
I've got a 5 rib that's very noisy and an 002 that also rattles, gathered in a futile atempt to do this. Then I actually started driving it with the existing early box and I find I like it. In the interests of experimentation, one day I'll strip them both and see what's what. nobody - I thought you needed special tools to reassemble the diff, or do you just mark and count the turns on the drive shaft things (don't know what to call them) and cross your fingers? Or maybe you don't need to strip this? Or maybe someone did it for you and you have no idea. lol
Can't know everything matey. I do what I'm asked to do and nobody asks me to build gearboxes when there are well respected company's like Cogbox already doing it. I couldn't compete with them. But for myself, for fun, I'll have a bash at mine when I get a chance. Setting the preload was what I was hinting at. Yes I've read about it briefly, but not in enough depth - I'll do that when I need to.
ive a standard 1600tp. My 4th gear is only useful for flat a roads and motorways. My 1st v short. I just stay in 2nd and 3rd in town. When empty. It won't pull 30 in 4th. It'll do 70 on the motorway on a flat. But 55 is where i mostly stay. Its calmer there.
That gearbox trickery sounds far too complicated to me! I'm going to see how I get on with the stock 1800 and look into getting someone to do it later on if needs be.
