5 Speed Box

  1. Can the 5 speed box from a T25 be made to fit a T2 with a type 4 motor?

  2. Now thats a question Ive always wanted ask but darent!

It will fit, but you will have fun and games getting the gear change to work as the gear change is in a different position on a t25 box. You could use a cable change system to make it work. If you look at the gear ratios, I don't think you gain much for all the work that is needed.

Whats the reason for wanting 5 gears?

  4. A big engine and not wanting to thrash it all day long.

  5. Assume its not just a case of swapping the nose, selecter etc then! Unsure what th ratios are but always wondered whether it would reduce revs and all the benefits that gives whilst getting it to pull right!

  6. What about the 5 speeds an after market company was making available a few years back??? Anyone ever try one of those?

  7. Some say that fitting a 5 speed box will make your engine overheat purely because it will lower the speed of your engine meaning less cooling from the fan that is also going at a lower speed!
Some say that the way to go is with an early 911 5 speed box!

  8. Some say he's got no face and that he likes to eat horse, we just call him............

  9. I'm pretty sure that the final drive of an 091 bay box and a 5 speed T25 box is the same or very similar. Therefore overall revs at cruising speed won't change - there will just be more gears to go through to get there.

I looked in to a long time ago when i went for a Subaru engine and in the end i just went with bigger wheels and tyres as it was the easiest option at the time. It works well as there is plenty of torque for hill starts so thats fine and then a top end for cruising is good too. This might not be for you if you are going for a specific look.
I think one of the vw gearbox companies were looking in to putting the front end of a bay box on to the back end of a t25 box but not sure who.

That sounds plausible. I have no need for 5 gears so an 091 box it is.

  13. I had a 87 cabriolet that I pulled the 5th gear and put a taller, diesel, gear in. I'm wondering if the same can be done with a T2. Keeping the same trans, just a taller fourth gear? Nothing crazy, just a little more cruising at highway speeds? Any ideas?

  14. Yes, you can get something called a 'freeway flyer'.

  15. I noticed some 4th gear ratios at .78. Is it possible to replace our 4th gears which are .85 with those .78? Would that free up some rpm's? Would they fit? Would that also take care of the overheating from less cooling issue? Just a thought.

  16. As already said, the 5 speed T25 box is equivalent to the 4 speed 091 2l box from a bay... 1st in the T25 box is like a low hill start/towing gear!!

TBR, what size type 4 are you putting in your van?

  17. They do fit... it's a cog-box special upgrade on the 091 box... I've had it done to a box before!!

i know a few guys that use a 1303 box in an prototype bay, but depends how much power you have

  19. 1303 box is only good to 150bhp, and that's in a bug, with no hard launching.... put it in a bus, and that'll go down!!
