all I'm saying is the air in a bigger balance pipe has it's own inertia, so defeats the entire purpose....too small and you may as well not bother.....this isn't my own wisdom....I got this from the tech a Judd....
"Because the four cylinders of the Porsche/VW design are on opposite sides of the engine and are not all co-joined like a V6/V8 manifold, a pair of plenum-type carbs need a crossover tube between the manifolds to make the two carbs work together as a team. The intake pulses on each side occur at 180 degrees from each other, and then have to wait 540 degrees before the next impulse. The second intake valve on each side then opens to a manifold with reduced intake charge pressure. To even out manifold pressures, the fix is to connect them with a tube." courtesy shoptalk forum.... That's why FI is better....
I don't know the science but the tickover balance is more balanced. I disconnected mine to see and it misfired on 2 cylinders. I think it's the short manifolds/single choke carb and in my case I had a cam that caused a bit of valve overlap. The balance pipe connected and all 4 fired and the engine stopped shaking. I won't think they're any use at all with your Dells. But you're right - VW fitted them with similar single choke short manifold cabs. I think the servo take-off is incidental because you don't need it for that. OK someone put me right then.
The firing order doesn't help - both on one side followed by both on the other. The single carb manifold balances itself. And what Vanorak said.
My bay also misfired until a balance pipe was fitted. It had firing issues on No3 cylinder. It all evened out once the pipe was fitted. Maybe this was just coincidence I don't know but it seemed to work everything out.
Tried lots of combos on mine ended up with balence pipe and vac advance dizzy very good, but set it up on rolling road different altogether, cost £120 but best money I've spent smooth good acceleration fuel consumption etc. Oh and I've gone for a 1641cc. Suits my needs not going to set your pants on fire but good performance and so far reliable, Marmite shouldn't have said that!
Suits me. This is much more useful and hopefully not heading to the bin in the morning. I'm sure the postman would have hurt his back if he'd tried to deliver all my cards, probably coming as a special seperate delivery
Anyway, back on subject here us tonights progress. I'm settled in the decision not to try and drive it to Dubfreeze so can relax a little. It's too exhausting tinkering everynight after a full day working in the cold. I did want to have a camp, but it can wait
