WANTED 2.0 gearbox

  1. I'm after a 2.0 (6 rib I believe) manual gearbox for my subaru engine conversion. Needs to be in good working condition. Anyone?

  2. Good luck, they're out there but the more and more research I do the less inclined I am to buy a secondhand one, certainly not for in excess of £500.

Seems that if they are ragged the bearings in the intermediate housing wear and the 'box then needs a rebuild. Two reputable gearbox builders in the UK have quoted circa £600 for a strip, inspect and re-work to get the box back to full working trim.

If you've got money to spare, try Bears or Cogbox, The Engine Shop and VW Heritage will (I think) sell them outright, but obviously they'll be more expensive without a 'core' box to exchange .....

This. £500 + for an unknown box then £600 + for a rebuild put me off so I'm sticking with my 5 rib box.

  4. I currently have a 3 rib I think. Its a 1600 to gearbox so don't think it will be strong enough

  5. What spec is the Scooby engine? Folk reckon the later 3-rib boxes with some 091 components are pretty good (so a 'CU' code for instance) but whether that is pretty good for 80hp, 100hp or what I don't know ....

Loads of people run scooby buses on 3 rib boxes

  7. yup there not as fragile as you would imagine ...

  8. I've got a 2001 ej20 non turbo so 115bhp I believe. Won't the ratios of the 3rib be abit short for the 2.0?

No idea but as I said loads run with 3 rib boxes

  10. Sorted. Been to visit Andy at tsr conversions who are local and the 3rib will be fine :)

    Who'd of thought it...
I've been in a few scooby bays with 3rib boxes, they go like stink.
    ;-)

  12. The 2.0l 6-rib has a higher final drive gearing ratio so it keeps the revs down a bit when cruising.
Are you having the conversion done by TSR?

  13. I'm doin the conversion myself but tsr is only up the road and Andy is really helpful :)

  14. I'm sticking with my 3 rib for my conversion, driven a scooby bay with a 3 rib and it was sound, a higher final drive would be nice but at the prices 6 ribs go for untested is it really worth it

  15. Where are you putting your radiators guys?

By the way, what happened to the 'f'' in your username whereuromnosecity?

  16. My radiator is here:

  17. That looks suspiciously like mine.

  18. My rad's going underneath, same as bb's
As for the "f" well it was sadly lost in the great TLB site crash, one of many casualties :(

If you are running stock height you can always put bigger wheels and/or tyres on the back..that's my plan.

My 3 rib box has been used with some enthusiasm and seems happy enough...I always thought the weak spot was the bolts holding the cv/driveshafts on.

Given the prices of second hand 6 rib boxes, you could toast a few 3 rib ones before it became more expensive to stay 3 rib.

In the future I'd like to look at the Subaru gearbox conversion...5 speed would be cool!

  20. I'm goin low so will just have to cope with the higher rpm. Subaru gearbox isn't too bad to do.you need to start with a AWD box then replace the input shaft and ring gear to ones that have been machined in reverse so the box effectively has 5 reverse and 1 forward gear :)
