I found what I can only describe as a sword under the back seat. A few SA coins and a few small calibre shell casings. Kept it all as a memento of its former life. A few of the springs in the drivers seat had broken. To stop the springs poking through the vinyl the seat was stuffed with several SA porn mags. I didn’t keep these As for the mechanical atrocities that had been inflicted - I could start a whole thread. Very satisfying working through them and slowly ticking them off. Enjoying your resto thread journey. That roof would look amazing cleaned and clear coated Stirlingmoz
On the question of panels. I know I will need some small repair panels on the cargo floor, and considering I made most of the fastback panels, which was a complete pain, I'm hoping to buy off the shelf for the kombi. So who are the goto guys for type 2 panels. I dont want budget panels, I want the best. I presume schofields is in the list.
Well, that was a lot easier than I thought it would be. Another well placed thump on the back left hand side of the roof. And wump....out it popped nicely. Looks a lot better now, I'm well chuffed.
At the moment I am still waiting on a manual, so I am not familiar enough with the type 4 engine to know if I have all the tin ware. But this is the box of bits i have.
Schofields is a big yes for panels but also, people like FBI VW and Parts Emprorium have body cuts with very good sections available. VW Heritage et al mostly use the same supplier although Just Kampers do some of there own. That said, sometimes you may come across a genuine VW panel thats been tucked away & forgotten about. Compile a wanted list & see what folk on here have?
I had a quick peep at FBI VW, which is totally new to me. And its a veritable Alladins cave of vw bits. Thanks for posting.
Whats Justcampers panels like. I,ve used klokkerholm which is pure dirt.I had to replace a set twice in 10 years so I wouldn't rate them. Dirt is probably the wrong word, cheap would be better. as I dont rate them to be fair.
lots of work... good luck... Pay attention to and document the SA specials such as the sticker for the tire pressure on the steering wheel or the marker lights at the front. There is nothing like that here and hardly any in SA either. Looks like there is a KAMEI (German company, KArl MEIer, foundet 1952) parcel tray installed below the dashboard (see page 6: https://www.vw-t2-bulli.de/data/books/brochures/1975-09-kamei.pdf ) and an imitation wood USA "Dashboard Kit" VW-USA order# "ZVW 146 201" (see https://www.vw-t2-bulli.de/data/documents/vw-us-t2-zvw-146-201-dashboard-kit.pdf ) regards,
I will for sure look after every sticker, plate, marking, and any other item specific to this bus. I will only be restoring what absolutely needs to be restored due to rust or mechanical failure. All the other little querks add character to the bus for me. But in the interests of safety the JB welded steering lock key has to go.
Some of that is for a T25 engine... probably all of it, but much is the same anyway... then again it looks like you have the matching T25 engine?
So I have the T25 engine, okay I never knew that. I am assuming the early T25 engine, as the later waterboxers are totally different. Is that a good thing or a bad thing that its a T25 as opposed to what else. Thanks.
The breather tower, dipstick position and some tins are different to suit a different engine bay but they're basically the same engine as the bay ones. Good engines. You can gather and fit the correct bay tinware to it without a problem, but the fan housing and alternator mounting arrangement are different.
So should I be looking for information on a T25 2 Litre aircooled engine, and is that what mine is. Sorry far all the questions but I am not familiar with type 4 aircooled engines, and I dont have the manual yet, so I dont know what identification my engine is, thats why I'm asking for a description of it. Thanks.
No worries, the info is out there. Best is to collect Bay tinware if you can, there are over 40 pieces. Try not to buy them one at a time on ebay for £25.
You have time to collect bits while you do all the other stuff. Time is your friend when it comes to snapping up bargains. lol
Find the engine number then you’ll have a better idea what you’ve got! I’ve got a few type4 tins in a box somewhere.
