  1. I changed the fuel lines and filter and come to think of it there wasn't much coming out the outlet. Thought there must be a valve or something! Right.. tank off job I guess!

  2. Morning everyone

I'll be taking the fuel tank off next week - has anyone done this before? I assume it has straps on it - anything I need to be wary of? I'll take the pipe off the filter inlet and bung it before I drop the tank down. There's quite a bit of fuel in there so I'll have to be careful when transferring it and dropping it down. Think I'll use a hydraulic jack.

Is there a recommended way of cleaning them out? I once used cheap cola in an old moped tank but I can't imagine that's the best plan!

If you've not taken the firewall off yet then don't forget there are two screws that are easily missed underneath the firewall.
It may be easier to just drain the fuel into something else if you can.
The nuts that hold the strap down have a tendency to seize on so soak them in penetrating fluid as otherwise you can end up twisting and snapping the strap.

Think I'd drain the petrol into cans first. Much safer.

  5. Which firewall needs to come off? I'll make sure to soak them in WD but i'd imagine there'll be some snappage!

The only one? It sits behind your engine.

I think you need to remind yourself how the tank comes out. Hint: it won't "drop down" with a jack.

  9. haha - I was just wondering if there were any Transporter specific things to keep in mind. Last tank I removed was a Capri one which was straight forward.

I just didn't want to start the job (don't get much time on it) and be stuck by something stupid I could've found out online first! Thanks for all of your advice, guys.

  11. I think I probably need to buy a new fuel tank and then build a whole T2 around it - thanks for your advice, Zed.

  12. Just in case anyone is looking to take a tank out - here's a great video to watch first

Understand the firewall comment now looking forward to cracking on with this and be back on the road in the old girl

  13. Afternoon everyone, is there a name for the long trim piece that goes above the interior trim panels and below the glass?

Doubt it because it's a panel van conversion. Not aware anyone now makes such a thing but I'm out of touch and these niche items do get made by folk from time to time.
my search would be for VW T2 converted panel van interior trim.

  15. Cheers @Zed I have one of them but I fear I may have taken the other one to the tip with the rotten trim panels

  17. I've been busy on the bus!

I've ground back rust from the floor pan and painted it with Rustoleum paint. I've got new trim panels to go in and I've also bought a Transit minibus seat with integral seat belt as I need 3 rear travelling seats.

I'm taking the engine out at the weekend to get to the tank and then hopefully she'll be moving again
