Well Flakeys bus is a sunroof model and Dickys was an early Westy. Both use just an aperture from the b post behind the doors to the c post, effectively the slider width.
Westfalia chopped a load more out in the later rear hinged buses but retained a steel section at the rear of the slider.
    Thus...

There's a plastic cover over it and beyond it is a rigid base board for the upper bed that extends back about as far as yours.

Then, behind the upper 'pelmet' trim I think are further strengtheners along each side...someone may be able to confirm this.

Behind the passenger seat on our late LHD is a further strengthener where bulkheads were removed

And dunno about this one, it may be standard on all sliders

There may be more and here the bodywork guys come in, like Flakey and @Zed and even the marque history specialists like @rsbadura

  6. Hello,
Some conversations are not at the quality level Volkswagen or Westfalia build it high tops and camper vans.
So e.g. better avoid off-road trips...

Some owners add afterwards reinforcement constructions to these kind of camper conversation - e.g. see Kombi Life enlightenment at

To avoid torsion of the body with opened roof VW build in extra reinforcement metal bars over the B and C pillars and some frame (see old VW image parts catalogue page 068-00, parts below the high top #2)...

    068-00.png

... and use stiffening plates over the entire width of the vehicle under the vehicle (page 053-00 parts #22 and 2x #21).

That’s about how much roof I’ve got and it’s been fine for 46 years.
    Drive it and enjoy!

  11. Welcome aboard from Oz. Kids will love the bus cruising around. You can get compliance R&R seats, seat belts need to be fitted by approved transport gov. fitters and they put an compliance plate on the front door frame. Well thats how it works in West Oz.
    Enjoy the trip...

I see a Ford Capri, looks to have wide arches fitted, is it the X-Pack style kit?

  15. You do! They're custom arches made from mk2 Escort rally arches
