The wire is a TDC sensor that would have gone to a diagnostic socket. It’s no longer used, either chop it off or leave it disconnected.

  4. Your fan housing doesn't seem to be seated fully. Also has no thermostat flaps.

    I can't see a thermostat
What side is it supposed to be on?
    Looking from the back.[IMG]

    There's no thermostat
    I assume I need one?
    What happens if I don't have one?[IMG][IMG][IMG]

  8. I would presume the engine has been kept in a good environment, it wasnt stuck to the flywheel.

As far I I know its been stored in the back of the bus inside a garage for the last 12ish years.

The thermostat would be fitted to a bracket on the right hand side of the engine under the cylinders. The split tinware sled plate on the right is to allow access.

Not having either air flow control flaps or a thermostat means.. it takes longer to warm up. Also it doesnt necessarily cool as evenly as with the flaps present but sprung open with no thermostat.
If your engine ever gets so hot its about to self destruct this could be the final straw. By itself it should not really matter. Except on the A38 ten miles west of Exeter on a hot bank holiday on the way to Cornwall .. when it might be the thing.

I'm not bothered about heating in the bus via the engine as I'm fitting a diesel heater under the floor.
I'm going to put blanks on the fan housing but what else will I need to do please.[IMG]

I've managed to get hold of a set of flaps they need a good clean up
But do they look intact, anything missing?
Also can't seem to find a thermostat anywhere.
Can the fan shroud be removed without taking the engine out?[IMG]
