any handy hints please? We’ve had one off but other side won’t shift at all. Lump hammer and wd40 not helping.
Brake shoes backed right off? Good thumping around the edge with a soft mallet (don’t go belting cast iron with a lump hammer). Good whacking in tje centre over the hub, where they like to stick.
Double oops. Been hitting it for best part of an hour and only movement is bending back plate . Shoes freed off.
All good advice. I use the same type of mallet you'd use for tent pegs. Cast iron too brittle for a lump hammer.
It's VW's fault for not casting a ridge around the drum for a puller. A utterly stupid design. If you've got any of those big circular metal bands that aircon folk use to clamp ductwork, tighten a few around the drum. Should at least be able to get a puller on the sticky-up screw bits.
Daft question, you have removed the drum locating bolts? Also, I found my drums love to stick right on the hub, some releasing fluid there is useful.
i'm a firm believer in the power of a good thumping stick but even i would be too cautious with a lump hammer on it. be careful!
Heat it up. Guy next door had a similar issue with his motor. Couple of mins of mapp gas got it shifted.
Cheers all for your advice. I’ve left it on an axle stand for tonight as had to go to work. I’ve been proper whacking it with a lump hammer!! The pozi screw? Is that the two smaller holes? We had the other side off and there was nothing in them. On this side one looks like a hole, the other as if there’s a hole in the plate over a bit that doesn’t have the corresponding hole be Watch if you know what I mean. Either way , no, not taken anything out! Ps I’m working with an old boy who has been a mechanic for 50 odd years and won’t listen. When I said about using a mallet he scoffed and started muttering about Forums!!! and then hit it with the hammer again!!! Pps I’m going to look up replacement drums just in case!!
I’d point out to him that he’s been doing it wrong for 50 years... Make sure the any small retaining screws are out of the drum face. Easy to spot if they’re there. They don’t do much, just retain the drum until the wheel’s on. When (if ) you get the drum off, dangle it lightly from your finger and give it a light tap with a hammer. If it rings like a bell, it’s fine, no cracks
“I bin doing it that way for 20 years, mate” “Well you’ve been doing it f——-g wrong for 20 years, haven’t you?” We know the sort...
