went to bed last night and soon heard the fireworks start, followed shortly after by anxious barking and scratching at the kitchen door, poor poppy in a right state panting and running round wide eyed she'd wee'd and poo'd (tiled floor luckily) and was scared to death took ages to calm her down and i guess we have a good week or more of it now with bonfire night being midweek.... great. Mille doesn't care but poppy is terrible, we got a plug in calm thing from the vets - well that's a waste of time then, anyone else suffer with a doggy who gets upset?

That might work, we also used to give our dog a saucer of Baileys. I'm not sure it worked too well but the dog loved it.

It's about time fireworks were only sold to organised displays.

  5. Yeah, our boarder collie is petrified of loud bangs and thunder as well, she tends to try and hide in the smallest space she can find. We always know when a storm is coming. It's real pain in the arse as fireworks go on for over a week and the noise from lewes bonfire night is amazing as only 5 mile away, a great spectacular to see but we can't leave the dog.

  6. My old collie cross was petrified.....we used to put two chairs close together, and put a blanket over them as a little nest for him....that helped. We also used something called 'rescue remedy' which seemed to help too. The vets sell something based on amino acids ,which is apparently very good too.......my current pair of dogs aren't bothered at all, but I know your pain!

  8. Our dog is the same with load bangs and fireworks. Started when she was in a kennels that was hit by lightning, shall never forget arriving at the kennels not knowing what had happened and found 6 fire engines outside but all the animals were un hurt.
Have just bought on vets advice a 'Anxiety reducing vest' made by KONG at a cost of £32 and seems to be working and will be long lasting remedy unlike sprays and tablets.
Its time to make these fireworks only at displays and why celebrate Guy Fawkes? wouldn't think of celebrating 9/11 or 7/7 would we!

With the shower we've got in our parliament I'm thinking of trying to reenact Guy Fawkes but in Canberra

  10. Gguy Fawkes was a terrorist - the Bin Laden of his day - perhaps we should rename it Bin Laden day

Sorry to hear that. Our dog was too thick to notice, the biggest bangs and she didn't even blink, just carried on as normal. That was lucky!

  12. My dad used to give our dog some night nurse. It worked a treat as he used to go nuts and would shake for hours.

  13. Thanks for the reminder, I will make sure I do walkies before 6.00 pm.

  15. Our collie freaks out in thunder. Usually to be found hiding behind the sofa...

  16. I made that mistake yesterday. It was getting dark while I was still walking the dogs, and it had barely got dark and the fireworks started up while we were still on the streets. One dog just stuck to my heel like glue while the fireworks were going off, the other one went into a super-hyper twitchy mode, barking at anything and running around. Gonna have to make sure we walk them nice and early for the next week or so.

  17. Thankfully we live on the edge of a village so hoping that we get fewer nights of fireworks to avoid. My wife's just back from taking the dog out for a good walk, 5pm and its pretty dark outside.

  18. Unfortunately I live in an area of Birmingham which, during firework season, sounds like a busy Saturday night in Beirut circa 1982.
