  1. Porsche.

  2. Type 4 is Porsche ;)

  3. How would you do it Paul?
How much power do you need?
Would you strip the Bus out or just run it?

  4. Pug is turbo though. Not sure how long these high power forced induction engines are going to last if used in anger.

Best NA from the last of the Porsche air cooled seems to be under 80 BHP/litre.

  5. Didn't see that. I noticed that you have to be "approved" by the 6 founder members to get in, so it does seem like you won't get in unless your face fits.

  6. One trick you can use is have one set of wheels for road use, and a smaller set for 1/4 runs, like I mentioned earlier, gearing is the key!! The 091 isn't ideal for 1/4 runs, but it is a very strong box

My van was essentially stripped out, but I was running 205/55/16 wheels which are bigger than stock bus wheels... not by much, but bigger all the same!! Not to mention the extra weight from the sunroof, cage, and heavier than stock front seats

I personally would just run the bus as it is... Look at Bubba with his Porsche engined westy... doing wheelies off the start line

@Alex VW Heritage what's the spec on your van?

Be warned though, it is addictive... once you get a time, you do want to go faster!!

Going back to your original Q, you need 110bhp plus.

Personally I would go with a 2270, as with the right set up, you'll get 200BHP (I'm currently around 150/160)

  7. I'm happy with what I've got (am getting), it'll be fine for me. A street sleeper, just enough to annoy the T4 and T5's.
I've clocked 200mph on the way down from The Creg, I don't expect I shall ever go faster.

  8. There are lots of people with Type 1's in busses running nitrous but not any with type 4's

BUT Drag racing wise there are a few proper quick type 4 nitrous motors such as MEX with his Ghia.

  9. I'm NOT getting back into racing.
I've spent enough to buy a dozen houses (or three villages Ooop North) on proving that I can go round in a circle faster than anyone else.
    NO, NO, NO.

  10. i'll reiterate, I don't want want to cheat. If it was only about going faster then yes, I could put a porsche in there, yes I could put a scooby in there or any other kind of go faster 'proven in another car' engine. That's lame in my opinion. The appeal is doing it using an old aircooled engine built with my own fair hands. In my shed.

I can't really strip more out of the doka, other than take the gates off and take the back seats out. It would look crap without its gates though...

so smaller diameter wheels with fat tyres - I can do that, i'm guessing this gets the gearing right to get through the revs and up through the gears quicker.

    :)

Its allowed under the rules of the club so how is that "cheating"?

  12. Take the back seat out, empty the glove box, go for a pre run poo, seriously try cutting the eight down as much as possible.

as for the drop sides, I think your best leaving the side ones up and I'd always though of making a bracket so the rear gate was angled like a wing so the air flows over itrather than hitting it like an air brake.

  13. Yeah seriously addictive,

Currently 2276cc Type 1, 48 IDF Carbs, FK10 Cam, 044 heads (which have had a weeks work on them alone)

    091 with 4 cog spider diff from a T25 Syncro and a longer 4th (I only use 1st to 3rd on the 1/4 mile)

    Current best was 15.1 @ 81mph

I empty EVERYTHING out of my van, I dont unbolt seats or the bed but deliberately have a pretty easy to strip interior.

Its just all a good crack!

  16. Number 3 is a 2.6L Type 4 with twin spark heads, its a proper bit of kit and I think (I may be wrong) the only one in the list running type 4 power.

  18. Me too, CBA today.

  19. I don't mean 'cheat' in that sense, probably wrong choice of word which was bound to be misconstrued.

My point is it would be relatively easy to go for one of the tried and tested options, upgrade scooby RJES diy kit, off the shelf conversion, porsche flat 6, scooby, alfa, ford etc etc - there have been many options over the years for conversions. I personally wouldn't feel a sense of achievement from doing that, therefore i'd be 'cheating' myself
    :)
    Probably just leave it open
    :)
    Exactly, that's what i'm after
    :)

  20. The number 1 on Alex's list, splitty pick up, looks like he has his tailgate propped horizontal.
