This was part of the reason I did a Maths degree as it doesn't tie you down too much. Was going to go into teaching but ended up working in Software.

I have to say a big “Thank you” to the kind taxpayers who paid for me to have, essentially, a years paid holiday in France in the 80’s as part of my modern language degree.

I had two stints both as mature student. First two yrs doing HND with sports coaching diploma most enjoyable with lots of good/funny memories and still good friends with fellow students.

2nd two years doing Business Studies B.Ed also enjoyable but more worky and I lived in a different town so didn’t go out with other students and as I was already playing for external sports clubs I didn’t join the Uni ones.

I’ve not kept in contact with any of my fellow students from there.

Although I’m not a teacher I think it’s still a handy qualification to have if needs be. :)

  6. Me too , paid to learn and not run up debt that won’t get paid back , plus you had a job and worked hard to keep it . Employers got their money’s worth too as education was about your job as well . Need more of this imo . Ps got eleven o levels but didn’t like English :DONC HNC in engineering too.

  7. This country has benefited more from people who never ventured further than their local Technical College, either through choice or circumstance. Tech was hard work whilst being in work, and no year out afterwards to 'find themselves' either....!

  8. I absolutely love people who’ve been to university. Keep churning out people with degrees in Cat Charming and Modern Interpretive Dance I say. You know the sort of people who love to tell you they did three A levels, then three years at uni studying South Patagonian Frog Identification but they can’t change a fuse. Love um. They keep me in work.

  9. And I bet you tutt when you hear stories about benefit scroungers !!!

  11. I love a good "University of Life" exponent. Degrees are useless things aren't they!

  14. I look at it this way. There’s degrees and then there’s degrees. When I was at school clever people went off to uni and then became doctors and lawyers etc. Now days everyone’s going. My mates daughters a lovely kid, really is, but she’s at uni studying Egyptian history, I mean come on, what the ***** is she gonna do with that degree.

I look at it this way, it’s Christmas Eve, your boilers broken down, you’re freezing your man plums off, who do you want to turn up, me, or someone with a degree in sports science.? There’s nothing wrong with learning on the job, there’s no shame in it. There is however too many people with useless degrees now working in Asda.

There needs to be a serious rebalancing in this country of technical, vocational education along side university for subjects that really matter. The university of life as you call it is just as valid. Half the people who rack up £1000s on degrees don’t even end up working in that field.

I’ve got a mate who’s a doctor, got a phd in the study of worms and soil. Seven years in education and he now works selling medical equipment. Do me a favour.

I miss the time to think, maybe research, whatever you want.

University broadens your horizons, exposes you to people from different cultures, countries and socio economic backgrounds in an environment less give and take than a work scenario.

You get out what you put in....you take advantage of the doors it opens or you don't.

So the hundreds of thousands of things researched and invented at Universities have no value?

Universities have two product....students and research.

The students provide comparatively cheap resources to drive the research.

  18. Had a great time.

Don’t remember much of those years, still in contact with a couple if guys I lived with - we got together last year and got absolutely smashed - just like old times.

    Happy days.

Biology is not much use now work wise tho’
