We all know these programmes were wrong, but it shouldn’t stop us from discussing them, the nazis were wrong it hasn’t stopped Yesterday on free view having a whole channel of programmes about them

  3. If you don’t learn from history you’ll be in danger of repeating it, so the phrase goes. There’s nothing wrong with the study of bad people if you learn how to stop more bad people. By people sticking their heads in the sand and pretending bad stuff doesn’t exist or happen then you get into crazy situations like we’ve had with radical Islam and more recently far right groups who operate virtually unchallenged in their communities.

Has anyone tried to stop you?

As you mention the Nazis, it's a pity that the 'comedy' writers from the 70's chose to mock the very people that stood by us in that fight, but as you say, it's all bants isn't it, no 'real' harm done.

The next generation coming through aren't snowflakes for objecting, they are absoloutely right to call it out, just as 'we' are to say times were different.

  5. We are very very very fortunate to live in a democracy that give's us the right to question anything unlike the majority countries that wouldn't

Give you an example Tom & Jerry thats band form TV weather you agree or not that s up to you i honesty don't think the producer's intentions where to cause discrimination.

  7. They were'nt wrong they were funny at that time . Very funny for everyone.
Now they are still very funny but you just can't admit you like it.
Such a shame we can't enjoy them again without feeling it's wrong.

    Just my opinion though.
If we can still have an opinion without offending someone or something that is ;)

I wasn’t talking about me I’ll talk about anything and everything , I’m talking about people in general most people when you mention love thy neighbour will either say
“Oh no I didn’t watch that programme it was racist “ or “ no I didn’t watch it cos it wasn’t funny” to which I say, bloody liars 17 million people watched it every week and at the time I along with 16,999,999 thought it was funny,if I was to see it now I probably would feel a bit uncomfortable watching it

Church attendance has been declining for many years. In any case the Church Of England was created simply so a King could divorce his wife and marry his mistress.

I'm just responding to the wider discussion, not to Mr Haynes solely.

Those TV programs were and still are funny to people of that time, fair enough.

Would anyone dream of making something similar now, no, and that's good news because those people largely don't exist anymore. People are less ignorant and better informed.

There was a lot of brilliant comedy TV writing back then that didn't need any of those subjects or content.

As to no harm done....anyone remember kids directly quoting the 'hilarious' one liners to poor unfortunates in the school yard? Just one simple example of a lot of harm that was done......Joey, Deacon, Rolan, Barry the Illegitimate child (young ones), Black Illegitimate child, Woofta etc etc.

All entered into the tome of making minorities lives a misery by deliberately segregation.

I have no moral higher ground, though I prefer Steptoe and Son, Dads Army etc from that time....but I'm not going to accept this was all harmless as it simply wasn't.

There were 3 channels back then, massive audiences were not rare on prime time, it's not a sign of pedigree.

The girl in this picture remains the person with the most hours on British TV ever, and consequentially had audiences of millions too.
