I got to Greece with one knocking , sounded like a stationary engine at times . Found a scrapper dumped at the roadside and `liberated` a drive shaft - job done and it`s still on the van Just bring it along to techenders - it`ll get you there if the wiggling has redistributed to grease .
I don't want you doing any hunting for bits, that is something I can actually do! When I posted that entire driveshafts with cv joints on both ends were about £120, you said they were poor quality. So I thought you knew who had decent cv joints or decent driveshaft 'kits' for sale and would just say 'XX have German made ones, i've fitted loads to customers vehicles and they are good'! Coolair do CV joints made by Jopex for £16.50 each or the entire shaft with cv joints etc for £120. No idea who Jopex are or if they are any good! Heritage do cv joints for £13 ish, the entire shaft for £125, I think these are the same chinese ones which most people sell Anyway the old ones have to come off, so my engineering friend says we may as well just see what we need when they come off. I'll reuse as much vintage german engineering as possible!
I hope to get this job done before techenders if at all possible. It depends on my helper! I changed my oil all on my own yesterday. It was probably the slowest oil change in the history of camper vans. Drove it to work earlier today and all seems fine though!
mine were certainly not poor quality but that doesnt mean they arnt out their , it was a few years ago so who knows ? Ring jk heritage or someone up and ask them about quality and if theirs a guarentee maybe ??
I rang Schofield to see if they had any NOS german built ones, they told me they and Heritage/everyone sells chinese They say they don't seem to have any problems. I can't find any proper german ones or any expensive ones so it looks like cheap and cheerful CV joints or inspect my current ones for damage (as per John MUir idiodts guide) and rebuild. Luckily my mate in an engineer so he will be able to tell me if they are shot. Shame he is so busy. Thanks to all for the advice and suggestions. I will update when sorted
I seem to recall @Alex VW Heritage posted not that long ago that Heritage had some genuine ones in, not cheap but top quality.
We did, we sold a batch of OE Genuine ones that were found, but we sold out of these a while back. Sorry.
I removed my near side shaft today and found that one of the boots was much newer than the other and had never seen grease in it's life! The joint was pretty worn (see pics), and although the other end wasn't as bad, there were definite signs of wear so I got on the computer to order a pair of joints. Everywhere seems to sell 'CV joint kits' which I don't need. Eventually I got onto Unity Motor Spares and they sell the joint on it's own - a UK manufacturer called Shaftech who sound to be top quality. The guy at Unity said they've never had an issue with Shaftech stuff. £23 + VAT for a quality CV joint. http://www.allwoods-automotive.co.uk/index_driveshafts.htm
If you want the Joint only we do them for £15.95 Retail so with the club discount it will be cheaper: https://www.vwheritage.com/shop/211...filter_ESP_Rational_vehicleAliases=TYPE 2 BAY
Oh - I didn't see those! That is good value. I've bought the Shaftech ones now and they turned out to be a full kit (boots, bolts etc) - Doh! Never mind - maybe I'll order the Heritage ones for the other side. D
I have a quick question please - on the joint there's a groove running round it on one side. I followed some instructions on the link below saying the groove should be on the boot side, but the JK catalogue has a note saying it should be on the outer side facing the hub or the box. Which is right please or does it matter? Do I need to take it off again!!?? http://www.type2.com/bartnik/cvjoints.htm Thanks
@bucksboy I have to say I'm very disappointed that you don't fancy driving for over 12 hours to help me out! In fact i'm so disappointed that it has taken me two days to summon the ability to even bring myself to reply!
