Your breakdowns?

We have a trolley jack that is in a carry case. Normally it sits in the walkthrough as we are travelling and in the awning when camping. It does take up some space but I’d rather have peace of mind that I’m not lifting the bus using the original jack in the jacking points.

Front beam and rear spring plates (unfortunately) are the favoured lifting/jacking points as the amount of lift on a standard 2 tonne trolley jack ain’t the best.

My last breakdown was this time last year :-(

It was at the end of a lovely weekend, luckily though. Apart from being upset about knowing I needed a new engine, the recovery firm could have done a better job of repatriating my fellow camper.

I heard a noise a few miles before and said out loud "I think I better find somewhere to pull over" - got onto a 70mph dual carriageway just outside York and BOOM * well, more of a clunk and it wasn't somewhere safe. Half in the left hand lane, half on the verge.

  3. No recovery * - i`ve alus been able to muddle through and get to where i needed to be .

    *Hugs tree*

Most awkward one was a puncture on a beach , wouldn`t be a problem as i had all the kit to sort it but one of the wheelnuts was TOTALLY seized . Managed to get the van 1/2 a mile off the beach and trundled it (via the local taverna ) to the local mechanic who broke 2 sockets and a breaker bar all to no avail . Spent the night in his carpark and next day we managed to split the nut with a grinder and plenty of chisel action . Wouldn`t take a penny for it but i found a toolshop in a town , replaced all his broken stuff with far better quality items and took him out for beers and a meal - t`was the right thing to do .

    Love the Turks :D:D

Check yer nuts would be my advice ....

  5. Drive shaft coming undone after a record time set replacing cv boots. Yep forgot to torque the bolts up. Luckily was just stopping so not much clunka dunka went on and just around the corner from a motor factors. Half hour fix. As previous posters have said, proper maintenance is the key.

  6. My last breakdown was a tyre blow out on the way to TE last September, the replacement set of tyres would have likely caused me a similar issue to @Lasty as the tyre place had put the wheels on so tight we had a bit of a struggle in the workshop getting a wheel off.

Never trust a tyre place to put wheels on correctly.

I observe youve had a ride on a Richford recovery vehicle. I grew up with the company owner Phil, he's a ruddy lunatic

  9. Is this the chap ?(probably one of his drivers!) I felt for the guy, it was bank hol Monday, hottest day of the year and I waited 4 hours for him. He didn’t seem looney but you never can tell!

When I got home, following the rocker arm failure, just for the experience, I sealed the splits with duct tape I bought while waiting for AA Relay man at a Sainsburys, put a jubilee clip from spares in the bus onto the end of the rocker shaft and started the engine.

And the time when the engine blew up with a hole in the case , it was still running until I turned it off.
