Wrong Heat Exchangers?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Rich. Jules. & Jolene!, Jul 22, 2020.

  1. The heat exchangers on our van have been changed out and now is the time to try and get some of the heating/cooling sorted.

Firstly, the picture is the rear of the heat exchanger on the passenger side, where the hose (oval shaped) from the small fan drops down from the engine compartment to the heat exchanger. Oh so it's not connected.
Anyone had this issue? anyone with ingenious ways of connecting these up.

Secondly, with the van came some tinware and heat riser pipes (ah yes off the heating system).
What I'd like to know is whether there is tinware underneath or beside the heat exchangers. There are bolt holes beside which part marry up.What does it look like?

Any help in understanding how everything connects up especially with a change in heater boxes would be appreciated.
    Thanks IMG_0175.PNG IMG_0174.jpg

That top heat riser is from California / us style heat exchangers, they have an oval hole. This is on the right hand side of the motor so the EU heat exchangers have a round hole, you need a round hole type heat riser.

Left hand side ones are same whether it be us or eu style.

The under tins are different too, they will not quite match up.

  3. Mine aren’t fixed either, was looking at using a holts exhaust product, there is one in a small tube that would make application easy.
Suitable for exhausts so temperature wouldn’t be a problem, not sure if others add a mechanical fixing such as a self tapper too?

  4. Thanks. Makes a lot of sense - the left hand side there is no problem. Would be nice to get all connected up properly as have a suspicion that this has caused some overheating leading to valve seat issue last year.
Would be interested to know where the tin sits. Is it beside or underneath the exchangers?

It may have caused the overheating, there is no telling! Our westy had the left hand one missing for years and the motor is still as good as it was in 2011!

I have an image of how the tins sit, they look like this:

That's all I have but you get the idea, you should be able to see the bolt holes in various locations.
