i have just spent the morning rubbing down a couple of old radiators that i bought , during the time i was thinking how much i hate prepping stuff , i don't mind painting sometimes but in general its a ball ache .

i was also thinkin about paradox's predicament , what can he do with his talents , he appears to like detailing stuff and does a good job - bingo , got it .

If he offered a detailing service you posted the item to him and he sent it back cleans shiny and painted , charged accordingly would you use him ?.

i would , i mean og parts detailed to the hilt and i only have to fit em , too right i would !.

He could even buy og parts , detail em and stick them on ebay .

what do you think , am i dreaming or is it a viable business opportunity ?.

Probably need to invest in kit a bit to speed the process up - but I'd be interested for sure.

Only downside is how to pack larger stuff so it doesn't get damaged in transit.

  3. yes!! (but not entirely sure what "detailing" is) but certainly for prep and finish *checks out postage for whole beetle* :D

  4. I like the idea in principle ....and would love him to detail my bits ;D

Dont think it would be that viable though personally for what he'd have to charge to make a living.

I used to buy cheap SU carbs, strip them, shot blast some of the bits, polish, refurb then re assemble and sell them on.

Whilst I would always make money on them taking into account how much I paid initially and how much I spent on new parts, if I took into account what my hourly rate would be it would have worked out that I was getting paid between 50p - £3 per hour ....depending on how lucky I was re selling them on ebay.

but that didnt bother me as I was only doing it as a hobby.

If he can do it, charge an amount that is a decent income for himself, cheaper than buying new or refurbed from somehere else .....and cheap enough for me to pay for it ;D then that would be great :D ......probably better quality work to :D

I'd love it if you'd prove me wrong and Para can make a go of it (or anyone else for that matter)

Personally I would never pay someone to do something I was capable of. If I couldn't be bothered then I would leave it as was.

  8. Id imagine i could make a bit of pocket money from it in my spare time but not a living

Plenty of companys in the states make serious money detailing -- not just bays but anything , its ok being negative if you don't wanna get out of a slump , but anythings possible and if you do something you loorve doing then its gotta be worth a go - not just vws either ,i'l send you some work if you want it and i will pay the pp , i like what you do so do others

I don't see why you couldn't offer the service quietly and see how it develops?

A bit of spare time work like you say, but you could do it for a bit and see whether there was any mileage in it long term.

  15. i like the idea for a little side job but as its been said i would not pay for things like this as i can do them my self .
i mean crome plateing is diffrent as i carnt do that but there are local companys to me that can.
still got to be worth a go if you like doing stuff like that then why not

  16. I have to thank malc for posting this as its proven to be thought provoking for me

Ive just plucked four pheasents and ripped the skin badly on each one as my mind was stirring this over lol

Thoughts so far are i dont have the free time to do it for other people at the moment as im always busy with running the house and looking after the kids

The little free time i have is spent moving my bus towards completion

Once the bus is nearly finished i may start up in a hobby style doing a bit here and there for people

Call it travveling fund money or such like

The thing is i dont think people would pay what id need to ask to make it worth the time and effort

Would you pay £500 upwards for an engine and ancillerys to be polished and detailed to a very high standard?

Its very labour intensive and time consuming which is why most people dont bother

Lead Design Consultant. Radio transmission sites for mobile phones. I was very good. :) 96% of my (Me in my summerhouse) sites were built without a hiccup where the average for the other contractors (large multi-national builders) was 54%.

  20. Were you happy though zed?

Moneys one thing but happiness is another

It used to crack me up that my wife working as a civvy chef in the officers mess earned more than me as a tech on fighter aircraft and she did less hours
