Have a look for furniture board. If I understand correctly, very strong but light. Not cheap though

  5. Can’t you just make it using frames made of 2” x 1” softwood, then cover with 3mm ply?

Vohringer board is good but expensive. Look up Morland lightweight furniture boards (I built mine from these) I think they come in 15mm and 3mm so you can combine panels and carcass in the design to keep it light.

the only downside may be min order on the number of boards.

  9. Vohringer is supposed to be the best as it takes a screw well in the end grain... however there will probably be a minimum order amount plus it’s bloody expensive.... I made my cupboards from 15mm full birch through ply as it is fairly light but strong AND smells ace. Also made a buddy box seat from 12mm external ply to my own spec that turned out very tidy & really practical. No pics I’m afraid, just copied the original with a few tweaks here & there.... It works for us.

I used the Moreland stuff for our interior. Evo design who are local to me supply it by the sheet (which just fits in the van!)

One thing is for certain I've never managed a wood because of a cupboard, mind you I was close when I first put a MFI flat pack together in the 70:p
