Just installed the engine, have power but nothing happening at the starter. I only seem to have one wire going to the solenoid, don't recall if there were two or not? The bus is fitted with a hot start relay which came away from its housing yesterday so it may be this at fault, how do I reverse the wiring for this, or is the relay the same as the one used for a split charger, if so I can try another relay. Any help appreciated as I'm scratching my head now
I don't know if its the same, I changed the starter on my 1800 Auto last week, there were two wires on spade connectors and 4 on the nut terminal,
That's what I though there should be two on the spade. So where is my other one? I can't think I'd have taken anything else off when taking the engine out other than the alternator. Will have to take another look. Can't help but feel it's the hot start relay though as it pulled out if it's housing so I've maybe broken it
Check the relay is earthed properly mate. if it is like mine it is earthed to the body by the bolt that secure it to the body!
starters are basic ,the nut is straight from the battery ,the spade terminal gets 12v to start... It only needs one feed for 12v...Turn key and check spade is getting 12v....
So is mine- it has one arm that you attach to the body and that earth's it and four wires come off the bottom. is yours the same?
One of the spades is for a connection to the defunct computer socket. To get rid of the hot start relay, connect the only wire from the loom to the starter spade.
Is the earth wire from the terminal secured to earth via the mounting bolt/screw? I fit them like that - 2 birds with one stone as it were.
Yes! Edit -- No, I was remembering my old bus which had the same and was earthed the way you said, I have looked at mine and it is simply earthed via the steel bracket on the relay frame. This is it.
If all else fails (and it does sound like it's possibly going to be a break in that white wiring loom because it goes very hard over time) have you not thought about wiring in a separate relay to take over the fuel pump? Had a bus in that wouldn't start. Turned out to be the plug at the relay was a really bad fit.
Thanks for the replies all. I'll check tonight but I must have dislodged something as I've connected a working relay and it's still not working
Duh. Sorry for the last reply that in this thread makes no sense. I thought i was still on Rickys about non starting.
So it was a loose wire to the relay, hiding under a layer of insulation tape... Sorted that and it fired right up, runs a treat, seems a lot torquier than the 1700 motor
