Wobbly steering - part deux

  1. ..... More on the wobbly steering saga started by Baydreams some time ago .....

Thought I'd fixed the steering on my van, but while travelling over the Dunheved Bridge into Cornwall on Friday last week it wandered across both lanes and then onto the hard shoulder!!!

Long story but got it home and today set about changing the only bit of the steering (apart from the steering box) that I have not renewed.

Check the state of this 'after market' steering coupler compared to the nice new VW branded replacement that is now neatly fitted to my bus.

So I guess my lesson is - check all of the parts and watch out for previous owners' bodge ups.

  2. Did it do the trick, tho'...?

  3. dunno - ain't tried it yet as it's lashing with rain here in Bath at the minute ....

  4. Aftermarket steering couplers? Based on personal experience treat them as a get you home device ..no more than that. I've seem them with VW logos and part Nos but made in China or Malayasia...good lookalikes, but rubbish IMHO. If you look for it the Chinese manufacturer does display their trademark....discreetly.

  5. Fritt - hopefully the new one is a genuine part - came from Heritage and you can see the VW 9 digit part number on it.

Looked at it long and hard - couldn't see anything to suggest it's a Chinese copy .... I hope Heritage sell gen. when they say they are gen.

  6. Well, let us know as soon as you can. I guess if it ain't fixed, it can only be the steering box. Looking forward to part trois. By the time we get to part dix, maybe we'll both have perfect-steering buses ;) Still no news on mine, apart from now having to replace the steering arms. Long story. Thankfully, I'm not doing the job myself.

  7. Baydreams - just posted a reply to your thread on steering arms.

I'm gonna try the van tomorrow as I have the day off - I'll wait for the early rush to die down before I venture out onto the road .....
