Wobbly indicator stalk:

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by agaric, Jul 24, 2016.

  1. Hi guys,

Have any of you ever experience this. My indicator stalk doesn't crimp on the steering column. So when I try to activate the switches. The stalksturn instead of the switch.
I have tried tightening the 2 screws holding the thing together but it doesn't solve the problem.

Do I need to take it off and install some spacers?
(I have not tried that yet because I'm away camping and don't fancy doing that before being safely back home)

    This is the bit:

They are a pain , mine does that , but not as bad as yours by the sound of it .
I tightened the screws up which helped , but not fully .
I used black insulating tape and wound it round the whole unit too secure it even more ...untidy but effective .
It fouled up the pipe for the washers but i never use the washers any how .

Main problem is i don't think you can get replacements for that type .....is it an early late bay you have ? not to sure what the alternative component would be . It would be nice to know .

Try the horseshoe bits inside in different positions.

  4. Yes it a 1972 "almost not" cross-dresser (late front, but fuel tank flap and sliding door locking mechanism in the door handle)
I usually manage to "fix" it for a time but eventually the issue comes back.
And yes I couldn't find a replacement on any of the usual seller neither.

I'll try that once back home thanks.

  5. I took it all off and wrapped the tape around the steering column then tightened the stalk unit up on top it dug into the tape and doesn't move now

  6. Tape seems to be the way to go.
I'll try @zedders way before... Then tape it is!

  7. Finally got around adjusting it. It's a 5 minutes job. I should have done that Sunday instead of waiting.

Inside the "box" there are 4 slots for horse shoe bits. 2 on each side of the steering column and 2 possible heights. But I only have 2 bits.

I have moved them from the low position to high and the stalk isn't wobbly anymore. (I've added tape just for double safety)
But do you guys have four horse shoes? Is it helping?
If so I may cut one from some piece of steel laying around.

Yes so have I. Will play around with the horseshoes as @zedders suggested.

  12. How much would you like for a pair?

If this was the biggest problem on my bus would be an happy man! But it does make driving in town a bit challenging since I need to hold the stalk to put the signals on. Resulting in having no more hand available for steering.

Moving the horse shoes from bottom to top made the stalk fill stiffer than ever before. Hopefully having 4 will make things even better.

  15. I just put some fine emery paper round the shaft then tightened it on. Did the trick.

  16. I had the same problem, but I've got 4 horse shoe bits

The indicators should have 4 horse shoe bits, one of which should have a small 'lug' in the centre

The lug fits into a small slot at the top of the steering column to stop the lot twisting (which should help the indicators self cancel) I noticed the horse shoe with the lug was in the wrong position, once changed to correspond with the slot in the column it fixed it.
