Wiring up fuel shut off valve

  1. Hi all
    Just wondered how substantial,
or not, the wire needs to be that I take from the coil to power my fuel shut off valve.
I have made a bracket up so it mounts off one of the engine case bolts on top of the case, so I was going to put a fuse in the wire, in case the wire was to come off and short out.
Do you think this wire will do.. 2mm diameter, currently with a 5 amp fuse 20220522_131333.jpg

  2. 2mm2 & 5A is fine.

I would put the fuse close to the source of power - the coil - not under the van.

  3. Actually, you said 2mm diameter, not 2mm2 cross section. Should still be ok.

  4. And I wouldn’t use Chinese cable ;)

  5. Yes snotty, not sure how to work out the spare area, but the wire measures 2mm diameter with the micrometer.
The fuel shut off valve is in the engine bay just above the engine case, so the wire will be totally in the engine bay not under the van.

  6. Ah, right. Cable should be ok if it’s made by the Lucky Number Seven Fortunate Dragon Best Cable company

Unless you have a fire extinguisher , I would consider putting the fuel shutoff solenoid outside the engine bay otherwise in an engine bay fire you can still burn through the fuel line upstream of the valve and empty the entire fuel tank into the fire.
A "free" extra protection feature for a bit more work.

  8. ^this is true. Rather defeats the purpose of it. Under the van is better.
