Wiring to battery.

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Mattlad, Apr 16, 2019.

  1. obvs on negative it’s just the earth, but on positive there is the large-ish feed to starter and there is also a smaller feed that goes into the old diagnostic port thinger. This cable has, want for a better word, fallen off. Should the van still start with the starter feed ie. power for coil is taken off this one or does the fallen off one need reconnecting?

    Thanks Awfs

Should be fine. You should also have a cable off to the alternator?

  3. Is the alternator cable straight to the battery terminal or does it go via starter do you know?

I think the one that has come off must be the alternator cable - it’s 4mm or something so would make sense.

I think originally the cable was routed via the starter but most have been replaced by now and just go direct to the alternator from the battery.
Just test that your battery is getting charge when the engine's running.

  5. If it just goes to the diagnostic port don't worry about it

  6. The van has been in storage for months and is miles away which is a pain in the ass - couldn’t get it started but the battery was quite flat

So wondering if I take some crimps with me if that wire is the charge circuit and put a fresh betters on it.

It should start given enough turning over with charged battery? and the no charge light will
Tell me if I need to get jiggy with mr crimper and his crimpy friends.

  7. I think it does but is quite large diameter so wondered if it went onwards from there. A load of wires in a loom come out of that port but buggered if I know where they go!

All the wires to the diagnostic box should be in addition to the standard wiring. I chopped ours out and don't remember having to re-route anything.

  13. Cool - I was hoping to get my labourer to give me a lift over but don’t want to pay him to watch me rewire the van.

  14. Well I have had a look at the relevant diagram(I think) and the battery terminal has a big wire to starter motor which also feeds power to the rest of the bus, then a 4mm and a 0.5mm both to the diagnostic port which should be safe to ignore assuming there haven't been that many modifications in the last 45 years:)

  15. Thanks - the van hasn’t had any messing with electrics by me or the 1 owner before me so the alternator, coil etc should be fed off that starter terminal.

I shall head over to the storage place next week with fresh battery and get that bigger fired up.

    Cheers
