Wiring the snail fan

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by chancee, Apr 15, 2014.

  1. Hi
Can anybody help. I am trying to wire in a snail fan.. Mine was missing so I have done the following...
Red to the battery and fused. Earth to body and blue to the 'd' on the regulator for the alternator.
The snail fan relay is connected to the proper block connector. Which came with the wires described above red, blue and brown.
I cannot find the original loom for the fan so I have wired it as mentioned above.
    Can anyone help
    Cheers
    Elizabeth

  3. I'm gonna be doing this at t/e and got a diagram with all colours and
I may be wrong but the brown to the switch looks like when switched on it goes to earth (brown and white on my diagram) so it should run I'm in the process of looking at this allso as I'm fitting mine at t/e I'll try get mine out after work as still has original wiring on it !!

  4. That's correct. The switch on the heater lever switches the earth (-ve) line to the fan relay (brown/white in VW-speak is a switched earth).

I wired mine up to its own switch so it doesn't always have to be on, if everything's good in the system it's often plenty warm with just the engine fan.

  11. Found three wires forgot these, grey, yellow and red and brown and white.
Anybody have a type 4 engine in a 75 that can tell me if these should run to the fan. They are on the right hand side below the diagnostic box.
Sorry but I just don't get the wiring diagram thing
    Cheers

  12. The brown wire with the white stripe goes to terminal 31 on the relay. It comes from the heater lever in the cab, and switches to earth when the lever is pushed down. This triggers the relay to turn on, but (in some vans) only if the engine is running (the blue wire is +12V with the engine running, and 0V when it is not).

Just to be sure, the red wire should go to the terminal marked M, and the blue to the terminal marked A.

I found a better wiring diagram for you:
    http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/wiring/bus_8_71_1700.jpg

I know it's for a '71, but the colour scheme is the same. V4 is the snail fan, J14 is the fan relay, and E16 the blower switch (on the heater lever).

    Good luck! :)
