Wiring cigarette lighter / accessory socket.

  1. I'm sure this will be an easy one for someone !! I've just ordered a cigarette lighter socket to fit to my '73 Westy so I can use the Sat Nav. It is a waterproof type with socket cover and fixing bracket which I'll fit at the bottom of the dashboard. It has a red and a black wire ( no backlight ) whats the best or easyest way to wire this in, I assume it needs to be live even when ignition is off. It's a standard set up, no leisure battery. Many thanks. Malcolm.

just wire to live and earth on battery with fuse but it will stay live to use at all times but if left plugged in and forget, it will drain battery

  3. I would take it straight to the fuse box and have a heavy inline fuse, but im no auto electrician, one thing i found is that some plug in gadgets like in car cameras rely on the power been switched not live all the time

  4. Ah see, i meant to say straight to the battery :D

No need to take -ve back to the battery, the whole van body is -ve, so attach it to somewhere convenient near the socket.

  6. Take it to the LB fuse box, with an 8 amp fuse on.
