Wiper motor rotor stuck

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Whitious, Jan 26, 2024.

  1. Hello! My first post. Hope it goes well.

I've been building -77 2.0 bus for a while now.

Just bumped to windscreen wiper motor issue. I think it's basically just the grease that has gone bad. Dark staff.

Took the motor aparts and everthing seems fine but I CAN'T GET THE ROTOR OFF to clean it. I've seen videos where rotor with the worm gear just slips through it's hole. Mine doesn't. I'm trying not to break anything. Is there a trick how it comes through. Other than strength.

    Cheers,[IMG]

Its a sintered bearing. Probably the oil in the metal matrix has "dried out" and is now a sticky glue.
Use WD/40 or plus-gas or similar as a solvent, alternating with some 3 in one or similar oil (or engine oil..) dripped onto the bearing and keep wiggling it.

Pull the brushes back - I think you can see holes where temporary locking pins (wire) are inserted on the outside to hold them back from the armature. Then when it comes apart you dont risk damaging the brushes. And its easier to reassemble.

I cut myself on that worm gear.. it can be very sharp.

When all else fails, a £25 brand new Golf MK 4 motor and one of @snottys kits or some 3.2mm female connectors on the new motor is an exact fit, apart from needing a different fixing strap to the fixing under the wiper assembly at the mid point of the front panel. This also overcomes 50 years of gradual demagnetization of the original magnets..new motor will be faster and use less current..

PM me if you want my old motor..it was removed as working but with ominous cracking visible in the big nylon gear in the gearbox. At least the armature spins in that bearing..

The best thing you could do is upgrade to a Golf motor @snotty sells the conversion loom
Well worth it, I've done both my vehicles.

  4. Not sure I've got any bits left. But yes, the best remedy is to fit a shiny new motor. For £25, bit of a no-brainer.

I have one of Snotty’s conversion loom and bracket that I’ll never get around to fitting.

  7. @Whitious : I've got one more loom kit left, if you're interested.

You could spray some plusgas or some other penetrating fluid on the bearing bit and leave it overnight

  9. @snotty Thanks for the offer but I think I'll at least check how it goes with the old one first. Maybe will get back to you after I broke this one. o_O

  10. No prob!

I cannot stress how much better and faster the mk4 gold conversion is. Like night and day on my one.

Is the gold one a special edition ? I'm sure mine was just from a plain old mk4 golf......

  14. As I recall, I did a Special Edition gold one for @Lasty

As above, upgrade well worth doing. Your 40-year-old wipers are going to pack up at some point.

The @snotty loom kit is a convenience, I did mine with a set of 3.2mm insulated crimps on the wires.
My bracket adaptor is more complex than the kit's metal strip (all you really need..) .. 20220910_170808.jpg

  17. Excellent kit provided by your friend and entrepreneur @snotty . Mine was indeed gold plated and it`s pencilled in for fitting ......

  18. You guessed it. I broke the old one.

@snotty Just out of curiosity. What's your price for the kit? And is it still a smart idea when it should be sent to Finland?

I found one MK2 Golf wiper assembly and will also have to look into that.

  19. Here's how it went. I got the rotor pulled out but there was this bracket that kept the "ball" in place. When trying to get it back bracket just kept bending tighter.

Ball should be removed from the shaft, then bracket inserted before putting ball back. Then pressing plate to aluminum that holds the bracket in place... I'll just leave it.

This is not even the original motor then? Any idea?[IMG][IMG]

If you can get a Mk 4 Golf wiper motor in Finland, I doubt @snotty 's wiring loom and bracket would cost many £ to send there.
