Wing mirrors

  1. Could anyone recommend a company which sells decent proven quality wing mirrors? Bought a pair of Schofield's finest last year which are now heavily pitted, these were to replace similarly bought rubbish from JK. It's the ones with the small kite mark on the back I'm looking for. Cheers.

Contrary to popular belief, chrome is NOT a corrosion protection covering, it just makes things shiny. Chrome does not corrode itself, but it is porous (explained as being laid down like the scales on a fish), so water and salt can get under the chrome and the steel rusts underneath.

Proper old school chrome plating involves a layer of Copper and then a layer of Nickel. This gives the durability and then the chrome makes it all nice and shiny. I got a quote for some parts from a proper plating shop and they quoted for 'dry weather use / garaged vehicle'. Seems nobody is interested in doing the job right now.

The old fashioned way of protecting chrome is to rub in lanolin after washing - this waterproofs the chrome layer so the water / salt can't get at the steel. These days, I would use ACF50 sprayed on and then rubbed in with a cloth to make sure it's fully penetrated. Do this regularly and even modern shoddy plating should last OK.

  6. :) Cheers guys, looks like C&C are the ones to go with unless being a full time wing mirror attendant is one's forte.
Anyone interested in a job lot of wing mirrors? Original proper West German shiny chrome with noninterchangable speckled mirrors or pitted chrome / stained stainless steel with perfect mirrors!

  7. I think Kieft and Klock sell the Hagus mirrors. Hagus were the originals.

I'm going to get me a pair of these - so either Kleft and Klock or C&C are going to be the business are they?

Sick of the adjustments on every trip

  9. my last Hagus mirrors lasted a fair few years.. Chrome on back as good as new but handley thing starting to pit and the seal around class was fallaing out. they went to a latebay peep now and I myself to some Wolfsburgwest ones which I thought I'd try out i stead of C+C just for a change I guess. The glass in these seem to have a 'zoom' effect which takes sme getting used to but no shakes at all which is good I guess. Still not sure how long they will last but they should as they were also mucho £
