Why are they all white, or cream-coloured?

  1. I've never really noticed it before, until I took the bus off for the first camping trip last week. But why are all caravans, motorhomes and modern-day campervans all white or cream-coloured? I mean, it's a bit boring, isn't it? Makes a camping and caravan park look pretty bland too, if you ask me. Very bland in fact. Why would you want to be like everyone else? I can't believe no-one in that industry has caught on to the idea that perhaps painting them in bright and beautiful colours (alongside the white and cream ones to keep their boring customers happy) just might put themselves one step ahead of the competition. I mean, come on, caravan and motorhome manufacturers, use a bit of imagination, for heavens sake. When I buy an Eriba, I'll be painting the bottom half to match my bus which, if I ever sold it (likely to another VDubber), it'd be pretty easy to change it, if need be.

  2. Yeah paint it, back in the old days of caravanning they had a few different gay( in old terms) colours going on but they are dull now. I painted my caravan orange and white, it looks like the circus is coming to town.

I find the interiors more depressing these days with grey surfaces as found in a lot of the van converted campers. It's like walking into a clinical space for a blood test at your local doctor surgery.

  4. I can't understand why they're all white either. Van conversion campers (ones where the original body is used unaltered except for maybe a poptop or hightop) are different colours. Maybe it's because they're all made of GRP and it's easier when ordering parts to make them all white? Either way, it makes caravan sites look sinister, if you ask me. Little boxes.........

  5. Im with you on this. And then there are the statics -lline on line as far as the eye can see and in some (What would be) beautiful places. Should be camouflaged really!

But then again my van is all white (doh)

I agree, rather plain & dull I know, yellow and white would look great! But it could be something to do with all, none, or some of the following I guess:

it reflects the heat in summer and contains it in winter
White plastics are more UV-stable than coloured
white and light colours are best for not showing up dents, ripples and minor abrasions etc
the glassfibre-reinforced resin they're made from is naturally off-white in colour. Its easier add pigment to the resin to make it brighter white than it is achieve a consistent finish by adding coloured pigment.
It's the same with boats: fibreglass ones are white by default, otherwise they can turn into ovens in the summer. It's less of an issue in Northern Europe than in other climates, but look at the colour of boats in the med: they are either white or they are baking!

Some of them are so HUGE as well, one couple turned up in a 2 storey thing which was wider than a double decker bus

I would say its to reflect the sun to dazzle other road users so to slow them down even when they are on the other carriage way or maybe to help keep them cool inside in are hot dry summers.

I thought most of them are made from sheet aluminium - certainly the ones I've seen being repaired or mostly that.

I was told its the thermal expansion - not because of the occupants comfort - more that when things of darker colours expand they break their seals, hence white.

When you look at a scrap caravan and realise how basic the construction is you do wonder where the expense is mind.

  11. Funny you should mention interiors...
when a van fitting fb wanted to be a friend which i allowed, they put some pics up of t4 intriors they fitted mainly grey.. grey and more grey.
    I commented they were boring,
its what the customers wants they replied,
it only what there offered i replied..
    and so on.
i deleted them from my friends list..
but thats good to know why there white caravans...

  12. I say leave em all white, I can then find my bus easier after a few sherbets in the site pub / bar...

  14. The real reason that they are all white is that they are all painted that colour to comply with 'the country code'
mayhap not the current version but certainly an earlier one.

    and that really is a f a c t

  15. All camping and looking the same? A bit like the prototype club camp then! All dove blue or magnolia!
