who can tell me what i have (engine wise)

  1. so im pulling apart the bus and apart from the usual things that others haven't done correctly as you always seem to find when you take on someone elses half started stuff, of which some is crazy i find it hard to believe how people can say they have done things when they have left things in such a mess, wires cut and shut, engine bolts not tight (hand tight) petrol pipe not clipped on or no clips at all, its crazy, i worry for the people who go to buy a "restored" car who dont know what they are looking for.

anyway, as im new to the aircooled world im after some info on the engine i have and what upgrades have already been done or what is or isnt correct
i have taken the dizzy off.
im think ive figured out that its a type 1 1600 twin port, (apparently fettled to 1641cc) of which i have no way of knowing?

    Regards

    Luke

It's a t1 twin port engine with twin carbs that I don't recognise but look fun. It has a nice centre linkage. It might be a good'un under the dirt.
no way of telling the size without taking a head off an measuring the barrels, but won't make much difference.

  3. Zeds "fun" probably means a PITA to anyone else;)

I just mean it's nice to have something different - I like the long manifolds - looks great.

Restoring can be unexpectedly expensive if you have your rose-tinted glasses on. A scenario I come across often is where owners have started with the bodywork and a respray, then found it cost 3x as much as they hoped and have to sell the van to pay the bills. :(

In these cases the engine and interior is often shoved back in any old how, just so it has them with it to sell in one piece. Sometimes the engine will only be any use as an exchange unit - the PO looked and then loosely re-assembled to deal with "later", other times it'll be fine, just not cleaned up. Your's hasn't been apart, so hopefully the PO was satisfied that it was fine as is. I'd check the end float and if that's fine take a gamble that it's a good one, clean it up, powder coat the tinware and see what happens.
