Whippo, 79 Bay Westfalia Resto

  1. Had a look, and noticed that too, I wonder if they could get hold of them. They are only around the corner from me, maybe I'll have a chat about this next time I call in.

  2. Hi, Just had a thought, you are doing propex. I have bought an exterior mounted unit, it is being fitted over the next couple of weeks, got it from T2Customs. Might be worth considering, I will let you know how it pans out. Should save us some space inside.

    this may help you...maybe not.
we've spent some time on this but your solution may be equally as interesting... let me know as the holes are being cut early next week..

  4. Planning a propex ( but after I get the engine in !!!!) looking forward to your photos
Interesting dialog on under slung tank
I read they were not uk legal so slung mine at the tip !!! During the strip down

Any outline costs for a replacement ????

  5. Hi, So are they legal or not? Had a few MOTs and no problems yet. They have a skid plate and are tested each year (in theory). Where did you find this out? To replace about £400 ish. I would go with a new one, and still might just to be on the safe side. Otherwise I've had no problems with mine so far. In fact its probably the easiest way of having gas on board, cheap to fill, convenient and you don’t have to use a spanner everytime you want a cuppa.

  6. Hi, I think that you hav espent more time on this than me, I am just hoping that Dave knows what he is doing! I did send him a link to your rather elegant solution though so I will be interested in comparing notes.

"Essay alert, you run the risk of boredom!! "

Paul, you're right the convenience is unquestionable & I'd rather have an external tank like the OG any day, all day long.
I've not heard they are illegal, but that doesn't say anything! I do know, as with everything it seems:rolleyes:, there are a number of euro regs. regulating the installation of new systems. Some times the regs. don't cover existing set-ups??

In fact there are loads of people who happily & safely use these tanks with no issues. We lived & travelled off ours for 6 months in one hit! But that doesn't mean they are inherently safe now or there aren't alternatives.

It's personal choice really but I don't consider the filling stations are set up in Europe to fill LPG tanks safely unless they have the latest float type system which allows 80% filling or so with no leakage. And good quality seals & pipework by the way. Ours doesn't, so with the outage valve set-up on mine, I personally don't consider filling is safe on our forecourts here.

Reports say that even some US filling dudes are refusing to fill the older tanks. Scaremongering? Probably...

From the research I've done it seems modern replacement underslung s are a compromise for us small bus owners. The smallest tanks are 717mm long for 20L or 8kg. The OG Westy one is perfect for a bay:(

An underslung Propex heater is useless unless we use propane coz of the low temp performance of butane (& low temps are when you really need the heat)! So to run on propane the only other option away from a safe and regulation friendly  underslung tank is an internal bottle in a gas locker with a drop vent in the floor.
Disadvantages are that they take up space & for extended (note I say extended) euro travel, UK propane bottles cannot be exchanged for continental ones, yet!
That's why I'm planning for a Gas Lo/Gas It refillable 6kg bottle during the refit. It will have an external fill point so all we'll need are the 3 adaptors for euro travel.
However, whilst I'm planning it for the cupboard layout etc. I may not install it yet as it will cost about £200 all in for the Gas It system & it's not really in the budget. For this summer we will probably stick with the expensive Camping Gaz 907's but keep them inside in the new locker.
All that is only my opinion but there's been lot of weighing up options of cost & safety & TBH when it comes to the propane it really has to be safety all the way. Especially following our filling scare previously.
It's your choice when it comes to stuff like gas and gas heating etc but it's a risk every time you use an older system that is highly unlikely to have had seals replaced, been pressure tested, may have old pipe on which rots from the inside out so you can't see it, an unknown history of bangs & scrapes etc etc...

Regards your underslung, I'm sure your chap will do a good job for you. There aren't many of these in buses yet & some people want them directed into the OG heating ducts etc. Again, needs are different. I had quite a bit of dialogue with propex themselves and even they had no definitive installation solution.
It just seemed the simplest way to connect on the late Westy was to tee into the existing bed vent. We'll be on it next week so I'll let you know how it goes....fingers crossed.
Whatever you do, be safe & sorry for the essay but gas is important to get right. If your Gas Safe LPG qualified Motorhome/Caravan engineer says your system is OK it will be:thumbsup:.
