which lowering method should I go with?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Bluepeter, Sep 4, 2012.

  1. I really need to lower my Bus, to stop people laughing at it if nothing else, but i'm unsure which way to go about it. Narrowed adjustable beam? Standard adjustable beam? or Dropped spindles?

What are peoples experiences with each method on ride comfort etc? Also what shocks/coilovers are people using?

    Cheers in advance Pete

They laugh because they are jealous of your ride quality...

  7. Just raised mine back up, I was sick of bottoming out all the time. The ride is so much better now.

  11. Speaking to a local lad last week who had dropped the front on Red9 coilovers. Any better?

    Not cheap though.

The full beam conversion isn't cheap but they do a coilover/torsion tube replacement kit for £415-ish.

Any feedback on the Transporterhaus drop spindles?

Ease of fitting, quality of the product, what additional parts do you need etc!

I'm very tempted to get a set for Major

We plan to do the whole lot, wheel bearings, new discs/pads, draglink, dampers & steering damper, fixed & adjustable tie rods plus the ball joints need replacing so its the ideal opportunity to do it!

I'll have a read on Transporterhaus' website too

That was my angle too Mork - it was all past it and needed attention, so it was now or never. In hindsight, never would have been the better choice for me.

  18. Mine sat as high as could possibly be. Slowly but surely, she came down as weight was added - as a heavier engine went in, a pop-top roof put on and the interior fitted in. I guess the front settled more than the back, which continued to ride very high. I didn't like that jacked up arse look (you could see the tops of the rear tyres, which I think makes a bus look daft at the back). So I had some adjustable rear plates fitted. I thought that would bring the back to come down by only 1.5'', but it dropped by 2 (you could go a lot further of course). And, in doing so, it kind of brought the standard front end down by another 0.75'' too. The bus now sits just as I always dreamt of, and the ride's not effected one little bit - it's still got that lovely bouncy bouncy feeling at the front. To me, it wouldn't feel like a proper bus without that. But it now handles a hell of a lot better in the bends - makes me feel that handling is all about setting the rear-end up properly. There were those who reckoned I should go further and get one of those Red 9 kits for the front. Nah.

  19. Hi BP - mines running Red9 coil overs and the torsion bar replacement with Horseshoe/Boomerang plates at the back, dropped 3.5 inches and although it took getting used to, I like it.

Still with 14" wheels, about to go to 15 alloys. An easy job to do, the most difficult thing was getting the torsion leaves out!
    Cheers
