Where do gritter drivers go in the day?

  1. ha ha. problems you guys don't have lol.

when the temperature drops and we have risk of ice on the roads, the local authority has trucks that drive around spreading grit/ sand/ salt on the road surface to reduce the risk of ice.

guess that's why all the pictures of the underside of your kombis look like marmite
    What's wrong with winter tires?
    Or is that not enough

  3. Not many people change over to Winter tyres in the UK, might help if we did though

  4. Winter tyres are becoming a thing more and more here. Most European countries mandate them either when temperatures go below a certain level, or between certain dates.

I have a stack of steel wheels with winter tyres already fitted for my Skoda, but I just can't be arsed :D

One wonders if the this fact wasn't lost on the UK car industry/powers that be. Halving vehicle life is good for the economy/tax take. I'd rather buy winter tyres than another car due to the previous one rotting away.

  6. yep, if we had guaranteed couple of months of snow every year then i think we'd have a lot more folks with winter tyres. trouble is, we go for several years without any snow and people get complacent/ can't justify the hassle and cost, so when we eventually *do* get snow we've got everyone on summer-spec rubber that just doesn't work

personally yes i have winter tyres. i also have some snow chains in the boot of the car right now lol - got them years ago when i used to take the car to the alps for snowboarding. never needed them in the uk though - the winter tyres i find are good enough to get you through snow as deep as the car ground clearance can manage

I used to have to go to Norway with work years ago. In winter (some date in October to March if I remember) winter tyres compulsory, studded tyres recommended. I think studded tyres are banned in a UK.

  8. A set of winter tyres used to be the norm in my Munich days, but as I recall no studs, as they ripped the roads up.

  9. I run all season tyres on my daily drive currently Michelin cross climate
I used to fit winter tyres in November but every year I have done so has been a mild winter and they wear out really quickly
The all seasons do wear down quicker than summer tyres but not as quickly as dedicated winter tyres.

I live rurally and the country lanes don’t get gritted and are often covered in mud and sections often are flooded
So the all seasons work out to be a good compromise.

Wow! You got your teeth gritted. Think I might've uttered an expletive or two getting that done too.

Yes, got all season tyres on the Mini and they are fine- don't do enough miles to notice how quickly they wear. I had summer and winter tyres on the hot rod BMW. The winter tyres made a huge difference in snow and ice and surprisingly on damp roads below 10C. Yes, they wore out quickly, but so did the Michelin Pilot Super Sport summer tyres as you might expect with a manual gearbox 4.8 V8...

 mmm now what is it they say? The size of a man's engine is inversely proportional to, erm, what was it now?

  14. Anything below around 8 degrees and winter tyres are meant to be better, I use all season tyres, Michelin cross climate which I’ve found good on my Volvo XC60

  15. Yep all-seasons are a good compromise, i have these on the bus (bridgestone weather control A005 Evo). Doesn't get used much in the winter but if it does go out then at least i know it will be fine if it snows. All seasons are also better in mud so they are good for camping. Modern "summer" tyres are engineered for lots of grip e.g. on race tracks when magazines do their tyre tests - that's absolutely pointless for a slow old bus.

I started using winter tyres on my daily when i was doing ski trips so i've always had two sets of wheels. TBH though i never get to go these days so if i didn't already have two sets i would just get some all-seasons for the daily. Makes a lot of sense.

  16. It has probably been done before but sayings such as this would be a good thread idea. ( absent Cockney rhyming slang of course :D )[/QUOTE]
