Anyone any idea what the wheel nuts should be torqued to please , think my local Tyre garage has over tightened mine with the air gun, thanks
94 ft lbs according to Bentley....but I find tight enough so they don't fall off but loose enough so you can get the blighters off is best.
The newton thingy scale is slightly easier to see on my torque wrench than the foot pounds, if I've lost my glasses again
I don't have any exact figures, but I was told the best way was to get a feel for it. Loosen your nuts off at the end of each long drive and then tighten them back up until you are satisfied. If you have time, you can do it again in the morning, or when your favourite football team wins. Sent from my SM-N9500 using Tapatalk
I have hundreds of vinyls, and trust me, you don't need to measure. They are all 12 inch. Sent from my SM-N9500 using Tapatalk
Its several uggaduggas with a rattle gun or one erk/skreek if you are using a manual spanner... Basically its enough torque to lock the springiness of the bolt and wheel so that even with the application of tonnes of shock load it wont come undone. Checking online at the engineeringtoolbox.com . Maximum recommended M14 tightening torque is about 150ft lb for grade 10... If the garage has done them up too tight, loosen them now and re torque as you will be slipping in the mud fighting with a puncture when the crunch comes...
I like my telescopic wrench. Do nuts as tight as I can with wrench collapsed then bound to be able to undo them with it extended. And hey there are 5 of them! Sent from my MotoG3 using Tapatalk
Lean on an 18" bar is right for me. I tested so I don't have to measure each time. I borrowed an almost new double wheel Transit late 90's that came with strict instructions to retighten the rear wheel nuts every 100 miles by jumping on the end of the 10ft scaffold pole supplied! I only went about 50 miles and yes they did need tightening.
Because I have locking wheel nuts I prefer using a cross shaped wheel nut spanner so I can push the locking nut in place while applying torque with both hands. I bought it 35 years ago in Halfords when tools were made in the dark forges of Sheffield.
We borrowed a double wheel Transit for a university trip and had a puncture... we couldnt get the wheel nut undone, we had the biggest guy in the group jumping on the wrench.... When the AA man came along he reminded us the wheel nut threads are handed according to the vehicle side. And he almost failed to undo the nut we had been jumping on and tightened up.... in the days before portable rattle guns...
Do them as tight as what ever wheel brace you carry can get them off. No point using extra long wheel braces if the one you carry is only 14 inches long as you won’t get them off in an emergency at the road side. Any tyre fitters that rattle gun them on but don’t do the actual final tighten with a torque wrench should be shouted at. Any they do this with locking wheel nuts should be sworn at on social media. Exhibit A My Passat needed new tyres. 1 special tool used by the tyre fitters, 4 sockets and 2 drill bits later I still could get the locking wheel nut out. In the end, bought a second hand wheel and butchered this one off. All because some lazy p***k couldn’t use a torque wrench.
