Wheel Detailing

  1. All,

I have a set of Fooks polished alloys on my bus and after a number of years I'm starting to see pitting in the more recessed areas. The main spokes and the rim itself are still sweet and shiny. I was thinking about getting them refurbished and the lower areas sprayed gloss black to emulate a Fuchs wheel. I saw some of the Cool Flo buses at Grill and Chill had this done and I thought they looked good.

Now, I tried a few allow wheel companies and either they don't phone back or want to do this. Seems you can't give money away these days.

I wondered how hard can it be to do this myself? The approach I thought I'd take would be:

    1. Jack up bus.
    2. Remove wheel.
    3. Give it a good clean.
    4. Use my dremel or similar to grind back and generally prep the recessed areas that have bubbled.
    5. Clean again.
    6. Mask up.
    7. Prime.
    8. Flat.
    9. Clean again.
    10. Gloss black top coat.
    11. Coat of lacquer over the whole wheel.

    Repeat x3 times....

Blimey - when you write it down like that it does look like a lot of work.

Anyone on here done this or spotted flaws in my plan?

    Cheers,
    Jon

  2. Where are you based there are some good companies around that will do the work for you. My only worry would be the dremel part, if you take the alloy coating off and don't make a perfect job of it then you risk getting water ingress and ruining all the good work you have done.

  3. Edd China did a nice refurb on some Porsche wheels on Wheeler Dealers a while back if i recall.... Involved masking and spraying up black on places - perhaps check that out for some ideas :)

  4. Seems people don't want to earn money these days. Tried a number of wheel refurb people and they don't want to take this on. Here's one of the wheels - pretty typical of the pitting I've got on all of them. I reckon this is not too big an issue with a Dremel and small grinding disc to flat this back then spray. Any views?
