I recently filled my tank fully for the first time. I always just threw 20 or so in it at a time before now.
I noticed a strong petrol smell usually after going around corners so suspected something had either perished or fallen off. So tonight after work I dropped the engine and took off the inspection hatch. ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ This is what I saw. Thankfully it's a quick fix. Brand new hoses going on it tomorrow. I had been afraid that a previous owner had drilled through the tank from inside the van.

The reason I'm posting this is because I've had my engine out numerous times but never inspected the tank.
Put it on your list of jobs to do whenever your engine is out.

  2. I took my tank out and found a little bit of rust on the out side of it and put a screwdriver strait into it :/ had to weld that hole up , it's were checking it all while your engine is out mate

What you see in your pic is so obvious as you don't have a firewall, I can't believe you hadn't seen this before!

Also I suspect you should have a good look at the filler hose as it's highly unlikely a full tank would smell any more than a half full one just due to that breather being disconnected.

Ah, I see. Seriously though I'd have a good squeeze of the filler looking for cracks, which is where the petrol WILL slosh with a full tank.

  6. Aren't the braided hose on the end of the yellow lines part of the vapour recovery system?

When my engine was out, I had a look at the tank, and the only real issue was the hose between the metal filler pipe and the tank. Had to cut it off to remove it, but it needed doing:

I also changed the gasket at the top of the filler tube, but the original was OK so is staying as a spare.

I got this diagram from a friend.
The coloured bits will all be changed before the engine goes back in tomorrow when I'm off.
I'll also take a good look at the filler pipe.
