  1. Right peeps, im hoping to be looking for an ipad to enhance our camping experience, whats peoples opinions on which ones best? I know the 4th one should be best but having little differences to the 3 is there anypoint in going for it if its going to be used for browsing and movies?

    Let the opinions flow :D

  2. We have a 3 (the first Ipad we have) and its fab. we love it the battery lasts ages although likewise it take a while to charge up. Its the wi-fi only version with 16Gb and its more than enough for us. I suppose if you have a hook up or solar panels topping batteries up you can keep it running all over the camping period. Ours keeps charge for at least 3-4 days with constant Wifi use in the evening.

Of course you can go for all the other tablets, samsung appear to be pushing theirs hard but after a few bad experiences with other manufacturers and as much as I hate the Corporate Apple empire, their products although not perfect still to me have a more durable and quality finish. Depends what you want really?

You can use your phone as a tether to your ipad if you dont want to spend the extra cash on a Sim version but you might still get charged by your mobile company for it?

  3. I recently replaced a 1st generation iPads with a 4th and the latest one is a big improvement. much faster to load screens, the screen itself is wonderfully sharp. The thing to do also is work out if you are happy to use wifi only or you want 3G. my view is that 3G transforms how you can use an iPad and is essential so you then have the "do I tether to my phone or have a 3G iPad?" I got one with a SIM as I have a work blackberry (which is a piece of poo,but is free) so I can't tether it.

Next thing is how big a memory do you want? I like to have films on mine so we can have movie night in the bus so I got a 64Gb one and am well pleased with it.

Finally which network? I used to be on O2 but swapped to 3 as its cheaper for more download capacity and the coverage is better where I am.

I'm loving the iPad mini, although mines a 16Gb it's spot on for what I want but it's a WiFi only, which, so far poses no problem whatsoever!

  5. I've got the 3 with 34gb and a sim slot. It's great :)

I got a 4 a few months ago and went for the 64gb wifi only version, and tether it through my iPhone whilst out and about and it works great - I didn't want an extra monthly charge or the extra £100 price tag - great bit of kit

  7. Ah thanks guys! The thethering sounds like a good idea, mrs brucieboy has hotspots on her phone that you can link it too, and even if her network decides to up the price a bir for it which i doubt, like spongebob said it would be cheaperrhan a monthly cellular bill as well as a 100 increase on the initial outlay. I recon 32gb may be big enough for what we want it for, so how does everyone on here download films, do you guys pay for them or use div x or something? The 3s were made for less than a year do you cant buy them new unless somewhere still has stock, apple sell them refurbished but knowing them the price will reflect the refurb hours added, the annoying think with the 4 is that its got the lightning connector the smaller charger port so although its a good thing, it means you have to pander to apples ridiculous prices for adaptors, from old to new, although there is probably ebay shops out there that do cheap equivalents, as my bus has the i phone 4 connector, some more thinking is required i recon lol

    Cheers fellas!

  8. there will be a 5th gen one out very soon ...

yep we did the same ....

  9. I've just tried tethering my ipad through my iPhone works a treat, like others have said don't spend the extra money getting one with a sim... Like I did :)

  10. The thing is that people are looking for different things. If I had my own phone I would definitely tether rather than sim and pay two subscriptions. I have a mate with a mini he uses that way and he loves it.

in terms of films. I buy the every now and then from apple (expensive) or buy or borrow a DVD and rip it on my MacBook then copy it into iTunes.

We hang the iPad from the poptop catch (rear hinged Westy) have a cable from the headphone socket to the stereo in the dash and have film night with surround sound. My girls go upstairs and Linda and M on the sofa downstairs with a glass of wine. Very nice in my view.

By the way, Elgato do a thing called a TIvizen which is a digital telly tuner that broadcasts over its own wifi so you can watch telly on your iPad too. Depending on strength of digital telly signal it works a treat.

I got the wifi dongle one.

  13. Nexus are great if you're on a budget. Just not the same quality as Apple.

  14. same for me............spot on for web browsing, games and social networking

  15. You get more for your money with the nexus, look at the component prices for both, the nexus is more expensive to produce than the ipad, you just pay more for the ipad, because you will and they know you will

  16. Personally I buy tax free in the US so I don't pay more than necessary. Like I said, the nexus is good value. No 4G (or 3G on the 10) mind and the OS is dreadful. Its also made of plastic and looks rather cheap. The iPad on the other hand is well designed, has an aluminium unibody, excellent connectivity and the iOS is superb. There's a reason the best app/game designers release on the apple platform first...

Crikey if it was all about value for money this forum would be a very quiet place.

  17. we brought a 32gb ipad, for us both to use, the lad got it for us as he works in sainsbury's, and got 15% off cha ching, not used it when be been camping or any of that, But it may add its handy because I cant open all my outlook e-mails on my laptop, but ok on the ipad. I thought it might be windows vista not playing ball.
