I'm going to buy a new alternator but I have no idea of what one to buy. I just want like for like but cant see any information on it. How do I find out about it? Cheers
Generally if its a Late bay with a type 1 engine, as pictured above ^ the standard alternator is 50 amps. The real differences are that originally, the bus would have an external voltage regulator, but you can fit an alterrnator with an internal voltage regulator. Higher currents are needed by a few people, but most people manage with the 50 amp size. If you drive around with a kilowatt sound system, or a row of halogen spotlights, consider a bigger alternator. And there is a different style one for a Type 4 engine, with an external regulator.
The non original and especially the uprated ones are pants and will break try and get an original one refurbished.

For less than the price of the refurbishment you can buy the two ball bearing races that you need from e.g. bearingboys.co.uk or simplybearings.co.uk, and a bearing puller kit off eBay, a 36 mm socket for the fan nut and have some fun. 1 x SKF 62022Z Metal Shielded Deep Groove Ball Bearing 15x35x11mm 1 x SKF 62032Z Metal Shielded Deep Groove Ball Bearing 17x40x12mm I looked up an old invoice at simplybearings.co.uk. That looks like a stock 50 amp Type 1 alternator. If it has one connector bolt and a connector tag on it, it has an internal regulator. If it has a connector bolt and 3 connector tags on it, it uses an external regulator.
