I raised this with the receptionist when we arrived, the civit du air can only be purchased in advance and only on the website, and has to be displayed in the vehicle, I also didn't know about it , the fine is 68 euro if caught, which suggests to me its not camera controlled , so you may be lucky, I can not do anything as you can't pay for it on a daily basis only in advance as i said earlier

Not a great system really, also each city/ town operates differently, different times ect

It is not like the congestion charges we pay -

It looks like you buy the sticker based on the registration year of the vehicle for a year, and its general type, stick it in the screen, pay a few Euros admin, that is all.

But as you cannot have a sticker in a T2 or anything old, the sign is a No Entry.. End of Discussion.

Then there may be additional speed limits put in place outside those zones if there is high pollution ..

There is a grey sticker you show for historic cars. So there may be a way out. But obtaining that may be tricky.

I have no idea what jonnie foreigner is supposed to do but I doubt if you’ll be fined. Apparently, I can’t use my bus in several cities, but I wouldn’t want to anyway, our daily diesel is allowed anywhere, anytime. And Mick (LEF) probably doesn’t bother with laws, rules or regulations.

Time to stop worrying about it I think. I know there are only 3 permanent areas of exclusion (Paris, Strasbourg and somewhere else) - it’s the pop up ones that confuse the most - where are they, how frequent and how do you find out about them in advance? Anyway- thanks for the replies and bon chance!

I think the third one is Lille.

But then you will find e.g. Bordeaux has a local system with a permanent zone.

Just buy the wine from the producer..

  7. Look on the RAC website as it tells you about driving in France and lists the cities you can’t go into ….. it’s a long list

When i said "not a great system" I did mean not being able to pay for it unless you have pre purchased the ticket, I travel in london and have paid both the congestion charge and ulez on a very regular basis for work, but i can pay both on the day ,

To be fair, the French seem to love their laws and regulations. Take, for example, the rather Byzantine one about men having to wear budgie smugglers in municipal swimming pools…

Ahhh, lol. The French can be a little 'particulièr' as Dom suggests!

  11. If you get pulled by the French fuzz , don't argue with them ,they speak very good french and you'll get lost in argument.

Take 2 ,10mm spanners because you're bound to loose one

  12. Geez, I only carry a spare fan belt, run electronic ignition change the oil every 3000ks, have it well tuned. Done 55000ks on the latest 2l type 4 minor rebuild. In that time approx. 12 years only had a coil go and rubber bend pop off on air bypass go, both an easy fix. If you have the engine running right you dont need all the paranoid spare parts shop packed in your van. Besides if travelling the continent you guys are just down the road from Germany for parts... ...just drive 'em and remember they are not sports cars so what is the rush to get where your going.

Totally agree about having the engine running right. Mine’s on 85k and not had a rebuild so is full of lovely OEM bits which are now well worn but hanging in there. A 123 dizzy so helps peace of mind too.

    But, I have to admit carrying a small spares department with me - just in case;

    Accelerator cable
    Bowden tube
    Alternator belt
    Clutch cable
    Rocker cover cook seal
    Short lengths of fuel hose
    Handbrake cable
    Coil to distributor HT lead
    Distributor cap
    Fuel filter
    Coil
    Vacuum non return valve
    Stub axle nut
    Idle balance rubber elbow
    Length of fuel pipe
    Length of vacuum pipe
    Light switch
    Flasher relay
    Ignition switch
    Headlight bulb
    Hazard relay
    Spark plug
    Regulator
Front wheel bearing kit with seal
    Fuel pump
    Fuel pump rod
    Length of wire
    Carb diaphragms for top
    Carb cardboard gaskets x 2
    Swan neck gasket
    Dip stick boot x 2
Pipe push on connector - straight
    Fuel hose clamps
    Push rod tube seals
    Selection of nuts and bolts
    Copper manifold seal
    M8 screws
    Shrink wrap
    Spade connectors
    Bulb holder for instruments
    Fuses - all sizes
    Float valve
    Fuel pump gasket
    Length of wire with connectors

Spoke to the driver of this, he said its not camera controlled, weekends are fine but not 8am till 7pm ,he also said he has never been stopped, they are changing it to cameras in the near future which is why they are not actively policing it, we never drove in to Paris we took the train, the metro has tyres 20220712_171620.jpg 20220712_171613.jpg

General point was that if you want to ensure something won't break, pack a spare.

  19. I must admit, I was worried about this when taking Ernie (and the mrs) to French France earlier in June.
We've just moved and he's only driven from the old house to the new house in the last 8 months (20 miles) so it was understandable really o_O

We did Macclesfield to Portsmouth in one stint, sticking at 55-57 and he was perfect! Total of 1250 miles over 5 days

I took a Litre of oil to keep him topped up, and some spanners, duct tape and a few cable ties, and one of those little jump start packs. I didn't have time to chack things over before I left, but Dunc @SundialCamperSpecialists did a quick service for me and all was good ;)

Don't worry too much about it :)

We do things in France and it's better to ask for forgiveness later
