Never seen anything like this arrangement.
I get the fan belt tensioner but not the different pipework ....

  2. External oil filter, or cooler, or both?

  4. The ones on the LHS? Pipes to remote oil filter.

Would that be a "DIY" job potentially to be wary of on a bus for sale?

  6. No. Although presumably the oil filter is in the engine bay which nicely adds to the heat in there. Mine is mounted under the battery tray so it cools a bit.

    Standard oil cooler pipe work.
It wouldn’t be that that put me off buying it.

I've re-started scanning the ads and this one stood out for having "engine mods" like the fan belt tensioner that triggered a note of caution, as in, what else have they done, why, and how well!

... would it be the colourful pulleys?! :D

  10. Depends who built the engine and what experience they have. Which is a question for the seller really.

I really think a modern vehicle would suit you better

  11. Pipework is for an external oil filter , with possibly a cooler .

Pulleys are a 'serpentine' system . If you notice the belt is flat which allows it to be changed easily as the elbows on the external filter pipework make getting a new standard belt on difficult as it's very tight between the case and elbow . Serpentine systems are an ok solution but rely on the three pulleys being ABSOLUTELY in line or it'll kick the belt off . Engine will then be toast unless you spot the alternator light .
Not a good idea in my opinion but others will no doubt shoot me down ...

  12. ... and pretty pointless on a stock engine which begs the question - what engine is in it ??

Thanks, this is exactly the kind of answer I look for in "mech tech" :hattip:
In hyperthetical mode, I think I'd be reverting to theore familiar set up for the fan belt ...

Exactly! However, asking that question of the owner a bit premature.
    Just after being "eddgicaited" :)

  15. Well if you have any doubts don't even waste time looking ...

Buy a good T4 and be happy...

You didn't say what the engine is so your questions are hard to answer. I don't think many would fit a pair of ICTs, a serpentine pulley kit and full flow filter/cooling (something done when rebuilding an engine) to a 1600...but some would.
Mine squealed above 4500rpm however I adjusted it and leaked oil. Stock system cured all that. Ha-ha! Maybe some use if you had a very powerful alternator and a 2,000w 18" sub.

Also IIRC I still couldn't quite get the belt off without loosening the pulley.

So...what is the engine? A beast or mutton dressed as lamb?

Sorry, no idea about the engine ... as I was saying, I'm nowhere near asking the owner, not least because I thought TLB would inform me on a set up that I'd not seen before ... which it has

I did consider that layout of pipework for my full flow filter + additional oil cooler on a 1641 , but I ended up with an in/out pump cover instead as for one thing it keeps all the oil pipes below the tinware.
This add-on has the effect of dropping the oil temperatures from 120+ down to 100+ C, if you are in the habit of driving the M4 at 65mph+.

If you look really closely you will see that the serpentine pulley is in fact not needed as the oil pipes are missed by the fan belt going directly from pulley to pulley.

  20. It's the lower union that's the problem Mike, VERY snug with a standard belt as there's only 5-6mm between the pulley and union. A serpentine set up is in theory a perfect solution but too prone to failure for me ...
