What do you think about the Big Bore Red Engine 1641cc (TES)?

  1. You won't get much extra power with a mere 50cc extra. Better to stick to a 1600 and invest in twin carbs, IMHO.

  2. @snotty I am planning to invest in the twin carbs.

By saying I'm sticking with around 1600 I mean I'm not looking at 1700 plus size engines.

  3. I got one about five and half years ago and it's done around 10k miles, no problems other than a small oil leak that I haven't really tried too hard to track down. So overall quite happy with it and still running a standard solex carb.

  6. I'd tend to trust TES. Builders have good days and bad days.

  8. Thanks @snotty

I'm interested to see if anyone is running one and if it's worth getting one

  10. Have a look on VW aircooled works Facebook page @paradox we're not convinced there aren't other problems with it. I don't want to waste money getting it sorted for it to go bang within 6 months

  12. I've had one in Lola for a few years now, only thing I'd recommend is to not let them fit a Chinese 009 dizzy, as mine self destructed a couple of years after fitting the engine...apart from that all good :)

  13. Am I right in thinking that the extra 1.5mm is the same as the maximum RAC competition overbore of 40 thousandths of an inch?

  17. Jim's demos always worth watching - he can do this stuff in his sleep!

  18. My local VW mechanic literally just called offering me his new self built engine.

Polished, twin 40s etc but wants £2.5k.

Thought it worth posting even if it's considerably more than TES

  19. TES are OK. Had to send one back once as I'd set it up like a right monkey and cooked it. They were good as gold, though the courier sucked and threw the replacement unit off the back of a lorry and smashed it all to hell.
Most replacement engines are only as good as they are set up- if you do tune by ear and you don't have decades of experience, you can't be surprised when it blows up.
