The Blaupunkts can sound pretty good and the ones you've posted are more period correct I'd say. Both are pretty low spec though - agreed that the Alpine is better.
You want a matsui currys own brand for added distorted sound get some old paper cone speakers in wedge form or maybe the hifi ones out your moms front room on the back seat
Blaupunkt all day long. I'm going through the same process for my bay. I've re instated the single dash speaker. I'm looking at radios only though, not even a tape!
Another vote for Alpine from me. I think BMW and others german makes fitted Blaupunkt, which are also good, but I don't have first hand experience. I'm still trying to find someone with an early 90's vehicle, for my top of the range Sony Headset with motorised front panel and remote control.
IME Blaupunkts from that era have a very "musical" sound. Not massively powerful, but quite chunky, punchy and rich with a nice midrange - a bit like proper Hi-Fi. Alpines generally go louder, have very crisp treble (assuming they're in good condition) and beefy bass. Decent examples of either aren't cheap - the higher end units are quite sought after. I've got a Grundig CC advance cassette head unit in the golf. It's really good. I bought it as NOS a few years ago for about £30. It's quite a bit more modern than it looks so has loads of features and good connectivity for subs, amps etc. Suitably Teutonic styling and very easy to use.
