Oh, and when Gas-It fitted my new one and tested it he told me there was no need for annual certification for our vans, whereas coach built campers need them. All we need to do is make sure the underseal coating is intact on the tank and that its leak tight which we can do ourselves.
I've just realised I can direct upload pictures so here we go! Here is my old Westy tank and you can see the plate coming away. Honestly the rust flakes were thick and scary! Here is the new tank next to the old one Here it is fitted. The rules require the tank to be covered in a protective underseal which he sprayed on after fitting
I got the name wrong. The company who fitted it are Gasure near Chester. The tank etc. and hardware are from Gas-It. Here are a couple more of the new install. I took off the Gas It sticker as it was a bit of an eyesore. The on/off gas tap and level gauge are behind the cover. He fitted the pressure regulator under the floor between the chassis rails. The filler is on the left next to the jacking point. It has a plastic cover and you simply screw in a UK adapter (supplied) and given its industry standard you can use a European one easily if you want. If he had fitted a BBQ point it would have been next to the filler. Here are shots of behind the cover and of the filler adapter fitted.
Got to be better than what I've got now...an unsecured cylinder just chucked under the bed The one I've bought looks to be almost as good as new under the dust..it came off a Californian import that was destined for a rental company based in Portugal where rented vehicles can't have external tanks due to the slightly complex nature of filling then and the potential for bad filling procedures... Which I can appreciate...I used to have an LPG vectra ...used to pap myself every time I released the nozzle...
@Bertiebot never heard of the coating thing before did he say what regulation/law it was? what height is it off the ground? are you lowered at all?
Wimp , I played with my gas tank as I wanted to make sure everything worked, I’m still alive and well in case you were worried
From the GAS IT site: ‘In line with the NCC CoP 306 on Motorhome Vapour tank installs, we strongly recommend that you protect your GAS IT tank with Underbody Spray to help protect and prolong your Gas tanks life and frame from Stone chips and future rust.’ The tank s 20cm diameter and the feet probably add another 2cm, I have 35cm from the bottom of the top hats to the ground on my unloaded but slightly lowered bus which would make the tank too low for my liking.
Hi all Not sure about specific regs. Just repeating what the approved LPG installer told me. Photos are maybe misleading as the ground clearance is similar to stock Westy. My bus is stock height too.
With a pressurised tank containing an inflammable liquid a few centimetres above the road I’d want skid plates rather than a coat of underseal.
Many thanks to @Bertiebot for the adaptor...sent to me free of charge ..that's what makes this forum great...great people , thanks again Phil
The Westy ones have a skid plate that protects the regulator and pipework. You can see it on one of my early photos. Its about the level of the bottom of the tank and isn't there to protect the tank. The perspective on the photo makes it look a bit lower than it is. My new one doesn't have one either but has a pretty solid sealed enclosure around the valves etc to protect them and the tank is a substantial thing and is designed for this task. The installers won't fit one if your bus hasn't got enough ground clearance.
