Yep and the rest is £100 of panels and elbow grease, £200 of quality paint? I think I'm being conservative, I allowed a bit more for the doors. Of course if you paid someone to do he work it's a whole new ball game. £7-10k? A lot of hassle removing and storing the interior to get at the long panel, removing and reinstalling the poptop to paint etc Genuinely I think this is one of the few buses that would be worth DIYing, there's so much good there and so little material expense.
I’m in agreement with you over it’s a good base to start from. It’s just crazy how much everything adds up to nowadays Also as it’s always been the case it’s not just the initial cost of the doors The scrapers will most likely be rotten The door seals will probably need replacing If it has opening quarter lights the frames for those will be rotten and require new seals No one is making opening quarter light frames as far as I’m aware The price of filler, sanding pads, thinners, primer and paint cavity wax,has gone up The price of parts has sky rocketed I reckon you wouldn’t have much change from 2k to do the doors alone without labour costs
We could argue forever, but just ignore the rust and look at the condition of the rest of it. I have no idea why you assume all those door parts need replacing. For example my 68 had original opening 1/4 lights, they weren't rusty and I didn't replace the seals either.
What do you reckon it’s worth then Rick all in all? From a restorers point of view as I realise this is an ideal project for someone with the skills, premises, and tools?
I think this has the potential to be a bit of a restorer’s dream. Remember the old phrase, beware the shiny bus? Well here we have the complete opposite. And it’s a Westy from a dry state. If you know what you’re doing, have the skills, experience, tools and space. But yes you don’t know the full story until you start digging and taking things apart. That’s the same for most classics though, shiny or otherwise! At least you have a better chance when they’re like this. No one is saying this is a quick flip.
Remember there's restoration and there's restoration. And I'm not being flippant coz Paras work is top and it's what he needs to do. However, there are also folk who do work on the fly, replacing bits and bobs as they go. Like the guys chat above re the doors and windows. It may be 2 k to restore them but is it a deal breaker now? For as many restorations that are nut and bolt there are an equal amount that just do stuff necessary to keep the wheels turning. What's the sellers story? It would be good to hear her perspective and may add some emotion to the conversation
I’d say it’s worth 6-8k if it was summer I’d stick it up for 10k and see if anyone bites If not then there’s lots of room to be knocked down. My only disagreement with others is the costing estimate to fix the bad bits From those pictures alone It needs cab doors Repairs to the front arches near the steps Side panel Battery trays and lower rear corners I’m not a restorer btw Just a keen amateur
I’ve had a look at the pictures directly on the forum and zoomed in instead of Tapatalk which kept freezing on me It appears it needs more than I first thought The front panel needs localised repairs and it appears it needs a new rear arch It could be a bit of a grower I’d stick by it’s worth 6-8k But it’s going to cost more than 2-3k to put right and tidy could you possibly take some more pics showing the bad bubbly bits?
I’ve been quite relaxed (for me) on a classified ad that ignored the rules. What it’s worth to a load of people who aren’t looking, is fairly irrelevant. Please add a price, or delete the post and stick it on eBay. Thanks
Yes, that’s why I asked what part of the forum to enquire and put this on. I didn’t realise there was a deadline to ‘tidy it up’. I’m sure @Bobbybusforsale will be along today with the price. Perhaps there’s a gap in thelatebay forum subjects. I only say this because I thought it was quite an interesting read.
Bobby Bus is 1979 T2 camper van. 2.0L injected engine. Left hand drive, US Import. Sleeps 4. 94777 miles Imported to the UK in 2009. It was originally Mexico Beige. Previous owner lived by the sea and that's when surface rust first occurred and bubbling started. I've purchased Bobby in summer 2018 as its 3rd owner. More rust occurred in the last 4 years. It had tower professionally fitted including electrics, Lite-Steer power steering was fitted that transformed the camper. It has a great engine, great runner. The inside is in good condition for the age and has all original Westfalia fittings and upholstery, except for the rock-n-roll bed fabric. The tap has never been used, gas rings work perfectly.
Hi, greetings from Germany! I would love to give the Beauty a chance… is it still available ? That easier, thanks Jo
Hi Yes it is. But again she is having trouble logging in! Mods might take a look if they have a moment.
