    I'm a bit bemused....

I took my stalks out over the weekend to fix the indicator return and investigated the washer mechanism on the other stalk. I know the original was the pressurised rubbish that everyone hates, but to my surprise, mine had a set of electric terminals as well that were not connected to any thing.

I robbed this picture of the Samba; on mine, just above the valve there are terminals, wires etc, all ready and threaded down the plastic guides [IMG] The plug at the base of the column didn't have any terminals for these wire though, so that was an easy mod ready to connect to a new pump

As for my bemusement, why has no on else mentioned these terminals before!? Mine is a deluxe, but I've never heard of the swicth being present at all!

Had the steering column out if the van to sort out the bearing and took this photo demonstrating the factory terminals that activate with the washer being pumped. Does anyone know anything about these at all?

I wonder if they are for making the windscreen wipers wipe when you wash the screen as modern cars? But some new law never got passed so they were never used....or something...

  7. You're a lucky man...you have the magical S1 terminal for electric washers :). A new-fangled delay wipe was an option from the factory. Should just have a dangly wire attached.

If you've still got the switch out...what's the part number? Want one!

  8. Hi,

There is a M Code option on some Swedish buses for example that have electric powered headlamp washers, maybe something to do with that?

Have you deciphered your M Code plate?

    Cheers

ive got delay option (don't work mind, sticking relay i guess?) wonder if i have this option, my washers don't work water pours from the steering wheel so it's on my long to do list.

I was guessing wash and wipe, the terminals were wired but stopped at the connecting block at the base of the column. I used the spare locations to wire in the new washer pump (rather than the crap switch on the dash that the PO wired off the hazard switch!)

I did decipher the M code, there was one or two things the website didn't decipher. Given that the wiring wasn't complete I don't think it would have shown up as a shipped option.

Woodylubber... it's a '75-'76 Deluxe Microbus (which is no longer very deluxe :D)

Birdy, I've just had another look. I knew something was missing but it was the paintcode for the lower half, not one of the options.

Snotty, if i take the stalks out again I'll let you know, but tbh, one of the screw castings on the alloy block is already broken and if I can avoid removing it again I will!

  15. Hi!

    Bingo!! 8)

Have a look here for more info on the factory headlamp washers

    http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=306431&highlight=headlight+washers

I guess these are your missing M Codes:

M-288 - Headlamp washer installation: All models, 1974~79

M-652 - Interval switch on windscreen wipers and wash-wipe installation (interval circa 6 seconds): All models, 1973~79

More info here on wiper wiring etc:

And another picture with a crewcab with the washer fitted, standard fit in Sweden due to the law. Probably why all your Saabs and Volvos had the same kinda thing!

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers!

    Excellent, well done!!

Some one asked what the part number was above... 211 955 501 C (copied from one of those links)

I also managed to make the stalk do the intermittent position after rebuilding it, there must've been a stop in there that prevented it from being used previously.

  17. as said above it was a mcode option to have electric washers with intermittant wipe it was fitted to a few high spec late lates and special editions like champaign editions etc as well as the swedish vans

the swedish vans also have a massive washer tank fitted to feed the headlight washers

  18. On my last bay the wiper switch broke, I got a direct replacement from GSF & it had a downward intermittent position. I never got around to wiring this up. I wonder if all the ones they sell have this facility?
